WILSON, N.C. – Second-seeded UNC Pembroke kept its title hopes alive in the 2022 Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship with a 14-5 victory over eighth-seeded Barton at Historic Fleming Stadium.

UNC Pembroke advanced to the semifinals on Sunday with the win, while Barton bows out of the tournament with a 2-2 record.

UNC Pembroke scored single runs in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 advantage. Gage Hammonds captured the first run of the game for the Braves when he singled in Christian Jayne. One inning later it was Jayne who singled in a run with Spencer Faulkner crossing the plate to make it 2-0.

Barton would collect its first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning when Ryan McIsaac scored on a fielder’s choice RBI by Tanner Halvorson. McIsaac had doubled down the right field line to start the inning and was then advanced to third on a fly out before scoring.

The complexion of the game would change completely in the top of the third with UNC Pembroke plating five runs to go ahead 7-1. Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year Ethan Ott singled in the first two runs of the inning. Ott’s scoring single would be a sign of the way the Braves would score the rest of the inning with Faulkner singling in a run, Garrett Littleton singling in a run and Jayne singling in a run.

In a game that featured a lengthy delay for weather, UNC Pembroke would plate three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to lead 10-1. Hammonds captured the first run of the inning for the Braves when he homered to left-center field. Ott would double in Trent Harris later in the inning and then Faulkner would single in Ott.

The Bulldogs would match the Braves' three runs in the top of the fourth with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. Jared Beebe started the inning for Barton with a single and then Raymond Paniagua followed suit with a single of his own. Andres Machado would single in Beebe and then Carelle Gonzalez would single in Paniagua. The national leader in being hit by a pitch, Dylan Scaranda collected the final run of the inning for Barton when his double scored Machado and set the score at 10-4 in favor of UNC Pembroke.

The Braves would add another run in the top of the sixth when Ott crossed the plate to make it 11-4. He had doubled down the right field line earlier in the inning to get in scoring position. The run scored when a Littleton single led to an error that allowed Ott to make his way home.

UNC Pembroke added two more runs in the top of the seventh with Faulkner singling in Harris and Hammonds. Barton would also score in the bottom of the inning with Chase Waddell connecting on a solo home run that made it 13-5. The home run was the first of his career.

The Braves would tack on one more in the top of the ninth with Wellington Guzman singling to left field to score Hammonds and set the final score at 14-5.

UNC Pembroke finished with an impressive 21 hits in the win over Barton. The Bulldogs had 12 hits in their loss.

A total of six Braves had multiple hits in the game with Hammonds leading the way with a 5-for-6 performance that included four runs scored and two RBIs. Faulkner was 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Machado led four Bulldogs with multiple hits with three. He had an RBI and a run scored.

Evan McLean captured the win on the hill for UNC Pembroke. He struck out three in his 5.2 innings on the mound. Chase Jernigan secured the save by dealing the final 3.1 innings for the Braves. He struck out five and allowed just three hits and one run.

Barton used five pitchers in the game with starter Alex Hart taking the loss. He pitched the first 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs and 11 hits. He struck out two. The two strikeouts allowed him to tie the Barton single-season strikeout record with 74.
