North Greenville Captures Fourth Consecutive Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament Title in Thrilling Fashion

WILSON, N.C. – Down 5-1 going into the top of the eighth inning, top-seeded North Greenville scored a combined six runs over its final three at-bats to collect a thrilling 7-6 win in 10 innings over fourth-seeded Mount Olive in the championship game of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship at Historic Fleming Stadium.
North Greenville’s win allowed the Crusaders to pick up their fourth consecutive Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament title.
Mount Olive collected the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when Alden Cottle lined out to right field to sacrifice in Jack Casbarro. The inning had started with Casbarro singling to right field. Vito Patierno then singled up the middle to move Casbarro over to third before he was eventually brought home by Cottle.
The Crusaders would even up things with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning. Zach Zarra singled in Josh Senter for the run for North Greenville.
Mount Olive took the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cooper George singled in Gordon Pihl, who had started the inning by being walked. He moved into scoring position at second on a ground out.
The Trojans would extend their advantage to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh with three runs. Cottle singled in the first run in the inning and then Pihl followed later in the inning with a two-run single to left-center field.
The Crusaders would cut the lead to just two runs in the top of the eighth inning when Conference Carolinas Player of the Year Marek Chlup doubled in Pat Monteith. Senter then doubled down the left field line to score Chlup.
The Trojans extended their lead back to three at 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Dylan Jeffries scored. Jeffries came into pinch run for George, who had singled to right field to start the inning. David Cucci singled to right-center field to allow Jeffries to make his way to third. Casbarro then grounded out to bring Jeffries home for the Trojans’ sixth run of the game.
The Crusaders would continue their furious comeback and tie things up at 6-6 in the top of the ninth with three runs. Bryce Roddey scored the first run of the inning for North Greenville on a wild pitch. One batter later, Ethan Stringer doubled to right field to bring home two more and tie things up.
North Greenville would capture the championship-winning run in the top of the 10
th when Zarra scored on a Jordan Holladay single to right-center field.
Mount Olive out-hit the Crusaders, 12-9, in the game.
North Greenville’s offense was led by two hits each from Monteith and Zarra. Monteith scored a run, while Zarra had an RBI and a run scored. George was the top performer for Mount Olive with three hits and an RBI.
The final of three pitchers used on the day, Tristen Hudson picked up the win on the mound for North Greenville. Hudson pitched the final two innings, striking out two. Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year Reece Fields pitched the first six innings for North Greenville. He struck out six.
Caleb Bishop was the losing pitcher for Mount Olive. He pitched the final inning and gave up the game-winning run. Despite the loss at the end, Caleb Irwin was strong in his start on the mound for Mount Olive. He struck out eight in seven innings pitched. He allowed just three hits and one run.
