Chowan, Mount Olive, North Greenville Earn USILA Scholar All-American Honors
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) announced the 2022 Scholar All-America teams and a pair of Chowan student-athletes and two Conference Carolinas programs earned the prestigious honor.
Conference Carolinas Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Jackson Downs, and fellow Chowan Hawk Jaxon Martin earned individual honors while North Greenville and Mount Olive earned Team All-Academic recognition.
Downs, a senior from Olney, Maryland, became the first Chowan men's lacrosse player to be named First Team All-Conference and All-American. He posted 36 goals and 25 assists offensively, while producing 39 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers as a two-way midfielder. He also ranked fourth in the league in assists per game (1.79) and third in points per game (4.36). His efforts in the classroom were just as impressive posting a 3.79 GPA as a Graphic Design major.
Martin, Second Team All-Conference Carolinas, led the Hawks with a single-season record 59 goals to go along with 20 assists and 79 points. Martin led the Conference Carolinas in goals and points. The Jarvis, Ontario native ranked second in the NCAA in goals per game (4.21), third in man-up goals (12), second in points per game (5.64), and fourth in shot percentage (53.2%). He also excelled in the classroom with a 3.33 GPA as a Psychology major.
North Greenville posted a 3.20 team GPA while Mount Olive had a 3.19 mark.
The USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee annually selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III.
A Scholar All-American must be nominated by his coach and be a student with a senior year academic standing and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale).
