Shanika Peterkin of Barton Chosen 2021-22 Herff Jones Conference Carolinas Female Athlete of the Year
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Shanika Peterkin of Barton has been selected as the Herff Jones Conference Carolinas Female Athlete of the Year for the 2021-22 academic year.
The senior from Virginia Beach, Virginia claims the prestigious honor for the second time in the last three academic years. She is the fourth from Barton to collect the honor.
Peterkin led the Bulldogs to the Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball national tournament in the 2021-22 season. She finished the season as the conference leader in scoring and second in rebounds while ranking fifth in NCAA Division II in blocks and double-doubles (18). Peterkin averaged 18 points and 10.6 rebounds per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the field. She also tallied 83 blocks and 53 steals on the season.
Peterkin was named the Conference Carolinas Player and Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive year in the 2021-22 season. She has also impressively won the last five Defensive Player of the Year honors in Conference Carolinas. Peterkin is the only player in league history to win Player and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season and is just the second to be tabbed as a three-time Player of the Year.
One of the most honored student-athletes in Conference Carolinas history, Peterkin closed out her illustrious career as a three-time All-American.
