Mercy Bell of UNC Pembroke and Haile Desmarais of Lees-McRae Named Women’s Soccer Players of the Week
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mercy Bell of UNC Pembroke and Haile Desmarais of Lees-McRae have earned the weekly honors in Conference Carolinas women’s soccer for the week ending Sept. 18.
Bell earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week while Desmarais took home Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
A 5-foot-9 forward, Bell scored three goals and dished out one assist for seven points to help the Braves to a 2-0 week. The freshman from Jacksonville, Florida opened the week with both goals in the Braves’ 2-1 comeback road victory over Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, Sept. 14. She then added one goal and an assist in Saturday’s 8-0 conference win over King. On the week, Bell put nine-of-11 shots on goal in 133 minutes of play.
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Desmarais recorded a pair of clean sheets and improved to 3-0-1 on the season with zero goals allowed in five games this season. The 5-foot-5 sophomore goalkeeper made a career-high four saves on eight shots in a 2-0 win over Emmanuel on Wednesday before making one save on five shots in a 4-0 win over Francis Marion on Sunday.
