Abigail Crain of Belmont Abbey and Sydney Wilson of Converse Earn Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Abigail Crain of Belmont Abbey and Sydney Wilson of Converse were selected as the Conference Carolinas weekly award winners for women’s basketball for the week ending Jan. 22.
Crain was selected as the Player of the Week, while Wilson earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
A 5-foot-9 forward, Crain continued her strong season in leading the Crusaders to a 3-0 week in league play as she averaged 25.67 points, 7.67 rebounds and added three blocks, three steals and seven assists. The sophomore from Windermere, Florida opened the week with a 30-point, 10-rebound double-double with two assists and one blocked shot in a 66-55 win over Chowan on Monday, Jan. 16. She added 26 points and three rebounds with two steals and two assists in a 76-50 win at King on Wednesday, Jan. 28 before closing the week with 21 points and 10 rebounds with three assists, two blocks and one steal in an 80-44 win over North Greenville on Saturday, Jan. 21. She has three double-doubles this season, at least 10 rebounds in four of five games and leads Conference Carolinas in scoring at 17.9 points per game. The Abbey currently leads the league in scoring defense at 52.2 points per game which ranks fifth in NCAA Division II.
Wilson, a 6-foot-1 center, had an impressive week for the Valkyries as she averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds per game with 10 blocked shots, five assists and two steals over three conference games. The senior from Henderson, Tennessee opened the week with eight points and nine rebounds (seven defensive) with three assists and one block in a road loss to Mount Olive on Monday. In a 62-56 win over Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday Wilson scored 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds (12 defensive) with six blocked shots, one steal and one assist. She finished the week with 14 points and seven rebounds (five defensive) with three blocked shots, one steal and one assist in a loss to Barton on Saturday.
