Michael Brown of Mount Olive and Charles Solomon of Belmont Abbey Named Men’s Basketball Weekly Honorees
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Michael Brown of Mount Olive and Charles Solomon of Belmont Abbey were selected as the Conference Carolinas weekly award winners for women’s basketball for the week ending Jan. 22.
Brown was selected as the Player of the Week, while Solomon earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
A 5-foot-10 guard from Winchester, Virginia, Brown had a stellar week after averaging 24.3 points, 8.3 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game as the Trojans went 3-0 in league play. The senior converted 26-of-41 (63.4 percent) from the field, including 60.0 percent (12-of-20) from beyond the arc. On Monday, Jan. 16, Brown posted a double-double after tallying a career-high 14 assists while scoring 18 points on 6-of-12 from the field with four rebounds in a 90-88 win over Converse. He followed that up with a 23-point performance on 9-of-13 attempts, including five three-pointers, while adding nine assists and two rebounds on Wednesday, Jan. 18, in a 95-88 victory against Francis Marion. Brown closed the week with 32 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including five-of-nine from three-point range in a 92-90 overtime win at Southern Wesleyan on Saturday, Jan. 21. He added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Warriors. Brown is delivering a career year with the Trojans and ranks third in the conference with 21.9 points per game while dishing out a league-leading 122 assists (6.4 per game) this season.
Solomon, a 6-foot-5 forward, led the Crusaders to a 3-0 week in conference play as he averaged 9.67 points, 8.33 rebounds, 2.6 steals, 2 assists and 1.6 blocks per game. The senior from Monroeville, New Jersey opened the week with 10 points and six rebounds (four defensive) with one block, one steal and one assist in an 84-83 win over Chowan on Monday, Jan. 16. In The Abbey’s 82-75 road win over King on Wednesday, Jan. 18, he added 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds, all defensive, with four steals, one assist and one block. He capped the week with eight points, 11 rebounds (six defensive) with four assists, three blocks and three steals in a 91-72 win over North Greenville on Saturday, Jan. 21.
