Conference Carolinas Wednesday Weekly Award Winners

  • Swimmer of the Week
    Tate Abbott, Lees-McRae

    A senior from High Point, North Carolina, Tate Abbott of Lees-McRae picked up the highest points in a tri-meet last weekend featuring the Bobcats along with Emory & Henry and King. 

    Abbott collected first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (24.63) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.27). She was also the anchor leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay-winning team that finished with a time of 1:44.05.

  • Swimmer of the Week
    Jacob Sell, King

    A freshman from Bristol in the United Kingdom, Jacob Sell of King picked up two individual wins in the tri-meet featuring the Tornado, Emory & Henry and Lees-McRae. 

    Sell collected a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.48) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.28). He was also part of the 200-yard medley relay-winning team that combined for a time of 1:38.45.

  • Player of the Week
    Alexis Burkhalter, Belmont Abbey

    A sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, Alexis Burkhalter of Belmont Abbey helped lead the Crusaders to a 5-2 win over Mars Hill. 

    Burkhalter first teamed up with Frankee Hendricks to defeat Elana Mackey and Kate Brzostek at No. 1 doubles. She followed that up with a victory over Brzostek, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.

  • Player of the Week
    Nicholas Cary, Belmont Abbey

    A graduate student from Lutz, Florida, Nicholas Cary of Belmont Abbey collected wins in both singles and doubles in a 6-1 team win over Mars Hill for the Crusaders. 

    In No. 2 doubles, Cary teamed up with Andres Golindano to defeat Mars Hill's Collin Maides and Sasha Molina, 6-3. He followed that up with a straight-set, 6-3, 6-1, victory over Diego Lopez at No. 1 singles.

  • Women’s Golfer of the Week
    Amanda Guzman, Erskine

    A junior from Valparaiso, Chile, Amanda Guzman of Erskine claimed top individual honors at the 2023 St. Simons Intercollegiate held at the King and Prince Golf Club in St. Simons, Georgia. 

    Guzman opened with a 71 at the par-72, 5,771-yard course setup. She followed that up with a 74 to finish with a two-round tally of 145. The two-round score allowed her to best the field by two strokes. Erskine finished in seventh place as a team with a two-round score of 628 (312-316).

    Women’s Golfer of the Week: Amanda Guzman, Erskine

  • Men’s Golfer of the Week
    Harrison Wierse, Barton

    A senior from Wilmington, North Carolina, Harrison Wierse claimed top individual honors at the 2023 Barton Fall Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,181-yard Cutter Creek Golf Club.

    Wierse won the 54-hole tournament with a 5-under score of 211. Wierse improved in every round to capture individual medalist honors. He opened with a 73 before carding a 70 in round two. In the third and final round, Wierse collected a 68. The Bulldogs shot a 2-under 862 (287-289-286) to claim top honors as a team at the event. 

    The weekly honor is the second of the 2023-24 season for Wierse.

    Men’s Golfer of the Week: Harrison Wierse, Barton

  • Bowler of the Week
    Connor Breaman, Belmont Abbey

    A sophomore from Greer, South Carolina, Connor Breaman of Belmont Abbey led the Crusaders to a pair of top-10 finishes to start the season. 

    Breaman owned an average 216.4 over the course of the two events. He started the year by bowling four games at the Midwest Collegiate Championship. Breaman posted an average of 211.8 at the event. He followed that up by collecting an average of 219.5 over six games at the Columbia 300 Western Shootout. 

    Breaman had nine games over 200 in the first two events of the year with a high game of 257.
