Chowan Drops Heartbreaker in PKs at NCAA Division II Championship

BOX SCORE | MELBOURNE, Fla.For the second consecutive match the Hawks of Chowan went to penalty kicks, however, this time the Murfreesboro, North Carolina program fell to seventh-seeded Lynn in Melbourne, Florida on Thursday night.

Lynn (11-2-5) got on the board first as they scored in the eighth minute, but Chowan (8-4-6), the No. 10 seed, drew even in the 15th minute on a goal from Junior Smith. The Knights went back in front with another goal in the 54th minute, once again off the foot of Max Lambertz. The Hawks were able to answer, this time in the 85th minute, as Harri Lovett and Leke Ademola fed Smith for his brace to send the game to overtime.

Neither team had a real scoring chance in the extra periods as the teams headed to penalty kicks. It took 10 rounds to finally have a winner as Lynn converted nine-of-10 attempts to the Hawks’ 8-of-10. 

Chowan was outshot 16-5 in the contest, but put four of the five shots on frame while Lynn had nine shots on goal. Chase Jansen, the Conference Carolinas Men’s Soccer Championship MVP, made seven saves in the contest.

The loss ends the season for the Hawks while Lynn will face regional host Florida Tech on Saturday.
