GASTONIA, N.C. – The first day of the Conference Carolinas/Great Midwest Men’s and Women’s Bowling Championships at Liberty Lanes in Gastonia, North Carolina on Friday saw teams compete in qualifying and the first round of double-elimination bracket play.

The day began with the men’s qualifying in which the teams bowled three team games and were then seeded based on total pinfall over the three games. Belmont Abbey jumped out to an 87 pin lead after the first game with a 1,094 and followed with games of 1,046 and 1,152 for a three-game total of 3,292 pins. The Crusaders claimed the No. 1 seed and bye in the first round. Emmanuel claimed the No. 2 seed with 3,011 total pins while Tusculum earned the three seed with 2,925 pins. Kentucky Wesleyan was the four seed with 2,880 pins and Walsh finished fifth with 2,716 pins.

In the first round of bracket play, Emmanuel raced out to a 3-0 lead over Tusculum only to see the Pioneers win the next two matches. The Lions were able to win game six, 191-186, to defeat Tusculum, 4-2. It was a similar battle between Kentucky Wesleyan and Walsh as the Panthers won the first three games before the Cavaliers won two games. KWC wrapped up the 4-2 win with a 179-157 win in game six. 

In the women’s qualifying, Kentucky Wesleyan claimed the top seed thanks to a third game 1,028 for a three-game total of 2,942 pins. Lincoln Memorial was second with 2,839 pins followed by Emmanuel (2,720) and Belmont Abbey (2,660). Tusculum was fifth with 2,656 total pins followed by Walsh (2,630) and Ursuline (2,413). 

In the women’s first round, No. 2 seeded Lincoln Memorial and No. 3 seeded Emmanuel each swept their matches over Ursuline and Walsh, respectively. In the 4-5 matchup, Tusculum won the first game, 190-162, but Belmont Abbey won the next four games to earn the 4-1 victory.

Day two begins at 8 a.m. with the men’s second round as No. 1 Belmont Abbey faces No. 4 Kentucky Wesleyan and No. 3 Tusculum will face No. 5 Walsh. Round three will follow with No. 3 Emmanuel facing the BAC/KWC winner while the Walsh/Tusculum winner will face the BAC/KWC loser. The men’s day will wrap up with the final round at approximately 11 a.m.

The women’s second round will begin around 1 p.m. with No. 1 Kentucky Wesleyan taking on No. 4 Belmont Abbey, No. 2 Lincoln Memorial will face No. 3 Emmanuel and No. 6 Walsh and No. 7 Ursuline will compete in a win-or-go-home match. The KWC/BAC loser will face the Walsh/Ursuline winner in round three while No. 5 Tusuclum will face the LMU/Emmanuel loser and the two unbeaten teams will square off. The final match of the day will be a win-or-go-home contest around 4 p.m.
