Emmanuel, UNC Pembroke Student-Athletes Prepared for NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships begin tonight, March 7, at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Conference Carolinas has five student-athletes and three relays set to compete over the five-day event.
The first Conference Carolinas student-athlete to compete will be Mariel Mencia Martinez of UNC Pembroke in the women’s 50 freestyle prelims on Wednesday in session No. 1 that begins at 10 a.m. She is seeded 29th with a time of 23.45. Her race is the third event of the day. She will be followed in the men’s 50 freestyle prelims by Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year Bartosz Mielniczuk who is seeded eighth with a time of 19.68. Should either swimmer advance, the event finals will be competed during session 3 at 6 p.m. The women’s 50 freestyle finals are the fifth event in the session with the men’s to follow. Emmanuel’s men’s 200 medley relay will swim in the last event of the day and is seeded 16th with a time of 1:28.19.
On Thursday, March 9, Susana Ungo and Mielniczuk will compete for the Lions in session 4 which begins at 10 a.m. Ungo will swim in the women’s 400 IM prelims which is the third race in the session. She is seeded 22nd with a time of 4:26.07. Mielniczuk will swim in the men’s 200 freestyle prelims, which is the sixth event in the session, where he is seeded 41st with a time of 1:39.51. If either swimmer makes the event finals, they will compete in session 5 on Thursday night at 6 p.m. The 400 IM finals are the third race in the session with the 200 freestyle finals the sixth race. The final race of the session will be the men’s 400 medley relay which will again feature Emmanuel who is seeded 15th with a time of 3:14.26.
Session 6 begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 10 and will feature Diana Suprun, Luigi Da Silva and Susana Ungo of Emmanuel. Suprun gets the day started in the women’s 100 breaststroke, the fifth event in the session, where she is seeded 24th with a time of 1:03.55. Da Silva will follow her in the men’s 100 breaststroke where he is seeded second with a time of 52.60, one of only two A-cuts in the event. Ungo will wrap up the session as she competes for the second time in the championship when she swims in the 200 butterfly where she is seeded 19th with a time of 2:03.48. Should anyone qualify, they will compete in the event finals in session 7 which begins at 6 p.m. The women’s 100 breast is the fifth event in the session followed by the men’s 100 breast and the women’s 200 fly.
The final day of the championship, March 11, will feature three individuals and one relay competing. Mielniczuk will kick things off in the second event of the 10 a.m. session in the men’s 100 freestyle where he is seeded seventh with a time of 43.49. Suprun will compete in the women’s 200 breaststroke, the fifth event of the session, where she is sixth with a time of 2:15.20. Da Silva will follow her in the men’s event where he is the third seed with a time of 1:56.51. The event finals will begin at 6 p.m. that night with the men’s 100 freestyle finals the fourth event of the final session. The 200 breast finals are the seventh and eighth events of the session while the Emmanuel men’s 400 freestyle relay will cap the championships with the last event of the meet where they are seeded 17th with a time of 2:58.84.
