Mitchell Soma Drives Barton to 36-hole Lead at Conference Carolinas Men’s Golf Championship

GREENVILLE, S.C. –  Led by a five-under-par 67 from Mitchell Soma, Barton posted a two-under 286 as a team to climb three spots and claim the 36-hole lead at the 2023 Conference Carolinas Men’s Golf Championship at The Preserve at Verdae in Greenville, South Carolina on Monday.

Soma posted six birdies in the second round, giving him a tournament-best 10 over two days. Soma also leads the field in par 3 scoring at one-under while individual leader Tom Bastow followed his opening round 67 with a second round 71 (-1) to maintain a three stroke lead. Bastow is the only player to shoot under par on the par 4’s over two days and he is two-under on such holes. He also leads the field at five-under on par 5’s. The individual highlight of the day came on hole number two as Jaxon Eck of Chowan recorded an ace and finished with a 76. 

Barton leads the field with a 587 (301-286), eight strokes better than Erskine at 595 (291-304). Belmont Abbey posted a 305 in round two and sits in third at 604 (299-305), two strokes ahead of Emmanuel (299-307).Mount Olive rounds out the top five at 607 (304-303). Individually, Bastow is six-under with a 138 (67-71), three clear of Soma at three-under (74-67). Laurenz Meifels of Erskine (71-75) and Pablo Riveiro of Emmanuel (71-75) are tied for third at 146 while Barton teammates Ryan Jahr (75-73) and Harrison Wierse (72-76) are tied for fifth at 148.

The third and final round of the Championship will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25 with groups going off the first and 10th tees.
