Barton, North Greenville Advance to Conference Carolinas Women’s Lacrosse Semifinals

TIGERVILLE, S.C./WILSON, N.C.– Third-seeded North Greenville and No. 4 seed Barton advanced to the semifinals of the 2023 Conference Carolinas Women’s Lacrosse Championship with quarterfinal victories on Tuesday.

In the first quarterfinal in Wilson, North Carolina, the site of the semifinals and championship final, No. 4 Barton defeated No. 5 Emmanuel, 17-3. The home team scored first, less than three minutes into the game, but the Lions (7-10) responded right away to tie the game with 3:51 left in the first quarter. However, The Bulldogs (10-7) scored again with 46 seconds remaining in the quarter and added two more in the second for the 4-1 halftime lead. A 7-0 third quarter put the game away for Barton as they scored 12 unanswered goals and led 13-1 with 12:37 to play in the contest. The Bulldogs added four more to the Lions’ two for the final margin. Barton attempted 40 shots with 29 on goal while Emmanuel had 21 shots with 13 on frame. Kate Matuza and Tamia Marshall led the offensive for Barton with three goals each and Kloe Martin paced the team with seven draw controls. Justine Dorelas led Emmanuel with two goals in the loss.

It was a busy first quarter in Tigerville, South Carolina, where No. 3 North Greenville downed No. 6 Converse, 16-9. Dani O’Meara started the scoring for the home team less than two minutes into the game before Converse answered with a pair of goals. The Crusaders (10-6) added three more goals before the Valkyries (8-10) responded with another to make it 4-3. North Greenville got two more tallies for a 6-3 advantage after one. Converse netted three of the next four goals to cut the lead back to one, 7-6, but NGU added two more, including a free-position goal with two seconds left in the half, for a 9-6 lead. The Crusaders put the game away in the third with a 4-0 quarter and matched the Valkyries three tallies in the fourth for the final margin. O’Meara paced NGU with five goals and had a team-best seven draw controls in the win while Emma Mayew added four goals and Emily Zambrano netted four, dished out an assist and had four draw controls. Hailey Obenchain led Converse with five goals and two assists in the loss. 

Barton will move on to face top-seed Mount Olive in the semifinals on Friday, April 28 at 12 p.m. at Electric Supply Company Field at Truist Stadium in Wilson, North Carolina. North Greenville will face second-seed Belmont Abbey in the second semifinal at 3 p.m. Both games are a rematch of the 2022 championship semifinals. The championship final will be held at Mount Olive on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m.
