Conference Carolinas Announces Addition of Newberry as Associate Member in Acrobatics & Tumbling
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Conference Carolinas has officially announced the addition of Newberry as an associate member in acrobatics & tumbling.
Newberry announced that they were adding the sport on Friday, May 12, 2023. Newberry will officially compete in acrobatics & tumbling and Conference Carolinas starting in the 2024-25 academic year.
With the announcement, Newberry becomes the 56th member of the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA).
"We are thrilled to officially unveil that Newberry has continued to help us lead the way and grow the amazing sport of acrobatics & tumbling," Conference Carolinas Commissioner Chris Colvin said. “This announcement is just a few short months after Newberry joined Conference Carolinas as an associate member in men’s wrestling. We are excited that they have accepted our invitation to join our conference as an associate member for another sport. Newberry gives us the chance to incorporate another strong institution continuing to work with Conference Carolinas while also giving us the opportunity to continue to expand the acrobatics & tumbling footprint."
Conference Carolinas will have 12 programs competing in acrobatics and tumbling in the 2023-24 academic year in Barton, Belmont Abbey, Chowan, Coker, Converse, Emmanuel, Francis Marion, King, Lander, Limestone, Mars Hill and Wingate. Newberry’s addition means that Conference Carolinas will have 13 members in the 2024-25 academic year.
Conference Carolinas just recently concluded its third season of acrobatics & tumbling in the 2022-23 academic year.
Limestone advanced to the 2023 National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) National Championship field. In addition, Coker joined them in the national event finals.
With its thrilling 266.725-266.470 win over third-seeded Azusa Pacific in the national quarterfinals at the Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex (ASRC) on the West Liberty University campus, sixth-seeded Limestone became the first Conference Carolinas member institution in the conference’s sponsorship of the sport to advance to the national semifinals.
Conference Carolinas acrobatics & tumbling captured its first-ever national championships one year earlier at the 2022 national event finals inside Matthew Knight Arena at the University of Oregon. Converse collected the national championship in the six element in the acro event, while Limestone picked up the national title in the open heat in the pyramid event.
Conference Carolinas will be a sole sponsor of 24 sports and will also collaborate with two other conferences to offer opportunities in four additional sports for a total of 28 in the 2024-25 academic year.
The ability to provide its membership sports sponsorship in 28 sports is the most in all of NCAA Division II. In addition, Conference Carolinas also provides championship opportunities for its member institutions in esports and spirit.
This is all in addition to hosting developmental championships in various sports for its member institutions. Conference Carolinas is believed to be the first NCAA conference to offer sub-varsity championships to its members.
An NCAA emerging sport, acrobatics & tumbling is the evolution of different disciplines of gymnastics, which includes the athletic aspects of competitive cheerleading. The format was created at the collegiate level in 2009 to address the interests and abilities of young women competing in this skill set. Individuals and small groups execute acrobatic lifts, tosses and tumbling.
The first NCATA National Championships took place in 2011 at the University of Oregon. Championships are held annually in April on an NCATA member campus. The sport is governed as a team sport at the youth level by USA Gymnastics.
