Four Conference Carolinas Programs Qualify for 2023 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA Division II Baseball Committee has selected the 56 teams that will be participating in the 2023 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship and North Greenville will host Southeast Regional No. 1 and be the top seed. Belmont Abbey is the three seed, Mount Olive is the four seed and UNC Pembroke is the No. 7 seed in the regional. 

The championship provides for eight regional sites hosting three teams and eight regional sites hosting four teams, for a total of 16 regional sites. All regionals are double-elimination tournaments and will be played May 18-21. Regional winners will advance to the best-of-three super-regional competition May 26-27. Super Regional winners will advance to the double-elimination championship finals June 3-10 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The finals will be hosted by Mount Olive and the town of Cary, North Carolina.

North Greenville won a second-straight Conference Carolinas regular season title this season and enter regional play with a 44-8 record, the second-best mark in the nation. This is the fifth consecutive regional appearance for the Crusaders who lead the league in hitting (.327 avg.) and pitching (3.84 ERA) this season. NGU receives a bye as a host of the three-team regional site and will face the loser of No. 4 Mount Olive (35-16) and No. 5 Georgia Southwestern (34-17) on Thursday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m.

The Trojans, who won the 2023 Conference Carolinas baseball championship this season, enter regional play with a 35-16 record. Mount Olive are hitting .322 this season and hit 13 home runs over five games in the conference tournament. They are also pitching to a 4.29 ERA. The Trojans and Hurricanes will meet for the first time in program history on Thursday, May 18 at 3:30 p.m.

Belmont Abbey earned the third seed in the region and will travel to Newberry, South Carolina to play in the second Southeast Regional. The Crusaders (38-16) will face sixth-seeded Columbus State (36-15) in the first round on Thursday, May 18 at 7 p.m. at Smith Road Complex. The Crusaders are making their second straight regional appearance after going 2-2 in the conference championship. The Abbey is hitting .301 on the season and pitching to a 6.09 ERA. The Crusaders are 1-3 against the Cougars including losing in the Southeast Regional final at North Greenville in 2018.

The Braves of UNC Pembroke finished third in the regular season and were third in the Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship. This is the sixth regional appearance for UNC Pembroke and third straight. UNCP is hitting .308 as a team while the pitching staff has a 4.32 ERA in 2023. They will play the regional host Newberry at 3:30 p.m on Thursday, May 18. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
