Luke Thierfelder of Belmont Abbey All-American on Final Day of NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships
RESULTS | PUEBLO, Colo. – The final day of the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colorado hosted by CSU-Pueblo was historic for Conference Carolinas as Luke Thierfelder of Belmont Abbey became the program’s first ever All-American.
Thierfelder, a Gastonia, North Carolina native, recorded the second-best mark in program history in the men’s javelin with a toss of 64.38m (211-3) which placed him second in the first flight and guaranteed All-America status, but eight of the 10 second-flight competitors threw further, leaving him just one spot -- and 0.41m (15 inches) -- shy of the finals. He finished 10th.
Thierfelder, the first male athlete from Belmont Abbey to compete at the championship meet, earned second-team All-America honors for finishing in the top 12. He wrapped up an historic week for The Abbey as Isabelle Flores, the first female athlete to represent the Crusaders at the championship meet, earned second-team All-America honors on Thursday in the women’s 400m hurdles.
