Tanner Halvorson of Barton Selected Conference Carolinas Male Athlete of the Year
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Tanner Halvorson of Barton has been selected as the Herff Jones Conference Carolinas Male Athlete of the Year for the 2022-23 academic year.
Halvorson is the fourth from Barton to claim the prestigious honor.
"What an incredible honor for Tanner, his family, Barton Baseball and the entire Barton College community,” Barton baseball head coach Keith Gorman said. “Tanner embodies the true spirit of competition. He competed all year with an unwavering confidence and focus that resulted in one of the best performances by a dual player nationally. Not to mention he did this in the best baseball conference in the country. Voted an All-American on the field, he was also an All-American off the field. He is loved in our community. Tanner was extremely coachable and did everything anyone asked of him. We appreciate Conference Carolinas selecting Tanner. They chose a ferocious competitor.”
The junior left-handed pitcher/designated hitter from Eau Claire, Wisconsin was a unanimous All-American. He earned first-team National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-American honors as a starting pitcher. Halvorson was tabbed as a second-team choice as a pitcher in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-America accolades. He was also named a Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) third-team utility (non-pitcher) All-American.
The 2023 Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year, Halvorson finished the season 11-2 in 14 starts with 10 complete-games and a 1.71 ERA in 95 innings pitched. The first team all-conference, D2CCA, NCBWA and ABCA/Rawlings all-region selection struck out 79 batters and allowed just a .220 average this past season.
Halvorson led Conference Carolinas in ERA, opponent batting average, innings pitched and runs allowed (22) while he was second in wins and third in strikeouts. He also hit .339 in 50 games this season with a team-best 55 runs scored and 36 RBIs with 20 doubles.
Halvorson closed the season on an 11-game winning streak on the mound while also collecting Barton single-season records for victories, ERA and complete games.
The Athlete of the Year Award (one male and one female each year) is the most outstanding student-athlete for the year in the league. Per Conference Carolinas Directors of Athletics vote, nominations will be accepted from member institutions to only include conference-sponsored sports and all nomination information, statistics and accomplishments are solely based on athletically-related criteria.
