Two From North Greenville Selected in 2023 Major League Baseball Draft
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Two North Greenville baseball players were selected in the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft.
Michael Rodriguez was selected in the 18th round by the San Francisco Giants, while Jalen Vasquez was picked in the 20th round by the Baltimore Orioles.
Rodriguez and Vasquez
being picked by the Giants marks the second consecutive year that a Conference Carolinas baseball player has been drafted. Darren Bowen of UNC Pembroke was selected in the 13th Round of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft by the Seattle Mariners. Last year Bowen became the first Conference Carolinas player drafted since 2019 when North Greenville had three drafted in Kipp Rollings, Michael Giacone and Utah Jones.
A first-team all-conference relief pitcher, Rodriguez was a perfect 6-0 on the mound in the 2023 season. The 6-foot-6 redshirt junior left-handed pitcher from Odessa, Florida made 24 appearances and pitched a total of 40.1 innings. Opponents hit just .185 against him in the 2023 season and he struck out 67. The all-region selection also had five saves.
A second-team all-conference choice at shortstop, Vasquez finished the 2023 season hitting .331 with 48 runs scored and 40 RBIs. The all-region selection had 26 extra-base hits on 12 home runs, 12 doubles and two triples. The junior from North Charleston, South Carolina also had 10 stolen bases.
