Conference Carolinas Monday Weekly Award Winners

  • Player of the Week
    Justin Sawyer, King

    A junior outside hitter/right side from Richmond, Virginia, Justin Sawyer of King posted a double-double in a five-set match with Tusculum. He averaged 4.0 kills and 3.3 digs in the match. 

    Sawyer finished the match with 12 kills and 10 digs while hitting .250. He also had a block. Sawyer is currently in the top-20 in Conference Carolinas in kills (2.0) and digs (1.83) per set.  

    Specialist of the Week
    Andrew Haber, King

    A sophomore setter from Whitby, Ontario in Canada, Andrew Haber of King finished his first career start with a double-double. 

    Haber dished out 50 assists in a five-set match with Tusculum and averaged 10.0 assists per set. He also had 11 digs to average 2.2 digs per set. Haber is currently third in Conference Carolinas in assists per set at 9.0.

  • Player of the Week
    Sydney Wilson, Converse

    A senior center from Henderson, Tennessee, Sydney Wilson of Converse averaged 25.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game in two wins last week for the Valkyries. She shot an impressive 75 percent (24-of-32) from the field on the week. 

    In a non-conference win over Johnson & Wales, Wilson ended her efforts with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Wilson concluded Converse’s league win over Mount Olive with 24 points and nine rebounds. She only missed one shot in the game, going 11-of-12 (92 percent) from the field. 

    Wilson is currently seventh in scoring (14.6) and third in rebounding (8.2) in Conference Carolinas. 

    Defensive Player of the Week
    Peyton Nation, Belmont Abbey

    A junior forward from Springboro, Ohio, Peyton Nation of Belmont Abbey put together an impressive performance defensively in two wins for the Crusaders. She had six steals and one block in the two games. 

    In conference wins over Lees-McRae and Erskine, Nation averaged a double-double with 13.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Nation put together one of her best performances of the season, matching a career high with 20 points in a 62-45 win over Lees-McRae. She also had seven rebounds and five steals in the Belmont Abbey victory. In Belmont Abbey’s league victory over Erskine, Nation finished her efforts with a career-best 14 rebounds in helping to lead the Crusaders to their eighth straight win. 

    Nation has now claimed weekly honors twice in the 2023-24 season.

  • Player of the Week
    Daylan Askew, Chowan

    A junior guard from Ahoskie, North Carolina, Daylan Askew of Chowan averaged 30.0 points, 5.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 blocks per game to lead the Hawks to two league wins last week. He shot 90 percent (19-of-21) from the free throw line on the week to go along with shooting 50 percent (17-of-34) from the field. 

    Askew started off last week with a career-high 33 points against rival Mount Olive with a career-high 10 field goals while shooting 55.6 percent from the field and 50 percent (5-of-10) from beyond the arc. Askew posted 18 points in the second half in the contest.  Askew would finish off the week with a 27-point outing against Young Harris. He added seven assists, six rebounds and three blocks in the conference win. Askew would go 11-of-11 from the free throw line in the contest. Once again, he was strong in the second half with 17 points. 

    Askew is currently third in scoring in Conference Carolinas at 20.1 points per game. He is also third in the league in assists per game at 4.5.

    Defensive Player of the Week
    Nico Ashley, Lees-McRae

    A junior forward from Elizabethton, Tennessee, Nico Ashley of Lees-McRae continued his impressive season with seven blocks last week for the Bobcats. 

    Ashley collected all of his blocks in Lees-McRae’s league win over Belmont Abbey. The career-best seven blocks in the game allowed him to remain among the elite in the category nationally. Ashley is currently fifth in NCAA Division II with 42 total blocks on the season. His 2.47 blocks per game lead Conference Carolinas and are sixth-best per game nationally. Ashley also averaged 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in the two wins.
