December 2023 Men’s Wrestling Freshman of the Month

A.J. Marshall, Emory & Henry

A freshman from Culpepper, Virginia, A.J. Marshall of Emory & Henry finished the month of December with an impressive 5-1 record. 

Competing at 174 pounds, Marshall finished the Averett Cougar Duals with a 4-1 record. He also collected a 7-4 conference win over Emmanuel’s Connor Smith on Dec. 6.

December 2023 Women’s Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Month

Kamille Cunningham, Converse

A freshman from Columbia, South Carolina, Kamille Cunningham became the second-fastest 60m sprinter in Converse history in her first 60m race of her career, opening with a time of 7.75. The time ranks second overall in the conference. 

Cunningham is also currently first in the conference in the high jump event with a leap of 1.54 meters. The freshman also has a top-15 conference long jump leap of 4.52 meters.

December 2023 Men’s Indoor Track & Field Freshman of the Month

Ryan Wilson-McCoy, Mount Olive

A freshman from Bealeton, Virginia, Ryan Wilson-McCoy of Mount Olive made a stellar debut for the Trojans at the Visit Winston-Salem Kick-off on Dec. 2. He set an NCAA Provisional standard and a new school record in the triple jump with a distance of 14.61 meters (47-11.25 feet) on his final attempt to place second overall.

Wilson-McCoy leads Conference Carolinas and is currently tied for 13th in the triple jump in NCAA Division II and is one of two athletes to hit the NCAA standard in the Southeast Region.

December 2023 Women's Basketball Freshman of the Month

Janiah Shular, Belmont Abbey

A freshman guard from Huntersville, North Carolina, Janiah Shular of Belmont Abbey picked up her second straight monthly honor, averaging 9.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in five games during the month of December. 

Shular scored in double figures in three of the five games. She collected a double-double with 12 rebounds and 10 points in Belmont Abbey’s thrilling 53-52 overtime non-conference win over Wingate. Shular also had seven steals, five assists and two blocks during the month of December.

December 2023 Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Month

Damerius Summers, Chowan

A freshman forward from Deerfield Beach, Florida, Damerius Summers of Chowan averaged 12.3 points per game in only 12.8 minutes per game. He also brought down 5.5 rebounds per game during his four games over the course of the month of December. 

Summers shot an impressive 71 percent (22-of-31) from the field during December, which included going a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor in a conference game against Southern Wesleyan. In Chowan’s conference win over North Greenville, Summer ended his efforts with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

December 2023 Men’s Bowling Freshman of the Month

Braeden Barnes, Barton

A freshman from Elm City, North Carolina, Braeden Barnes of Barton led his team to a third-place finish at the inaugural Bulldog Invitational at Westview Lanes in Wilson, North Carolina.

Barnes led the tournament with a 203.7 average over six games after individual play on day one. He earned all-tournament honors for the Bulldogs.
