GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Championship started on Saturday with two preliminary sites. Hosts Converse University and North Greenville University advanced to the final site at North Charleston, South Carolina.
Converse Preliminary Site
First Round – No. 11 Barton 3, No. 8 King 0
In the first match of the tournament, Barton College used a .238 attack percentage to upend King University. The Bulldogs won the first set 25-22 behind a .227 attack percentage before taking the second set 30-28. Barton hit .313 in the third set, a 25-20 win to take the 3-0 sweep. Henly Sleight led Barton with 15 kills and 13 digs while Lauryn Pitt added 14 kills. Lilly Meyer posted 25 digs for the Bulldogs. Riley Nelson and Gracia Love led King with 10 kills apiece.
Second Round – No. 5 Converse 3, No. 11 Barton 0
The Northwest Division co-champions started their tournament with an outstanding offensive performance, hitting .343 in the 3-0 victory. The Valkyries took the first set 25-18, before a 25-15 second-set win. Converse then cruised to a 25-12 third-set triumph. The Valkyrie attack was led by 14 kills and a .387 attack percentage from Ariel Bryant. Noemia Chiacchio posted seven kills and nine digs with a .438 attack percentage while Mackenzie Day registered 17 digs.
North Greenville Preliminary Site
First Round – No. 9 Southern Wesleyan 3, No. 10 Young Harris 2
The opening round went back and forth as Southern Wesleyan University jumped ahead and later came back to earn the first round victory over Young Harris College. The Warriors took the first set 25-19, but Young Harris came back with 25-20, 25-23 wins in the second and third sets. The Mountain Lions hit better than .200 in both sets. The Warrior offense bounced back in the fourth set, holding on to win the set 25-23 to force a fifth set. In the final set, the Warriors used a 4-0 run in the middle of the set to gain separation and take the set 15-12 for the win.
Michaela Andress led Southern Wesleyan with 15 kills and 24 digs while Angel Jimenez followed with 14 kills and 24 digs. Faith Paxton led the back row with 33 digs. Lily Hidalgo and Shelby Mullins led the way for Young Harris with 16 kills apiece while Lyza Thigpen posted 27 digs. Joha Bernis added 21 digs.
Second Round – No. 4 North Greenville 3, No. 9 Southern Wesleyan 0
North Greenville got off to a hot start, winning the opening set 25-19. The Trailblazer offense followed their impressive first set by hitting .364 with 17 kills in the second set. The Warriors battled nearly point-for-point, but North Greenville took the set 25-20. North Greenville then finished the match, winning the third set 27-25.
The first and second rounds continue on Sunday as UNC Pembroke hosts Shorter University and Belmont Abbey College starting at 2:00 p.m.
