Lander Claims Title at Inaugural Conference Carolinas Men's Wrestling Championship

PEMBROKE, N.C. - Nationally second-ranked Lander claimed the inaugural Conference Carolinas Men's Wrestling Championship title on Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court on the campus of UNC Pembroke on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. 

Lander finished conference play a perfect 9-0 in the 2023-24 season and they continued that form into the Conference Carolinas Men's Wrestling Championship. The West Division champions after a 6-0 mark in division, Lander opened their efforts on Sunday with a 33-10 victory over East No. 2 seed Newberry. The top seed in the East Division after a 6-0 mark in division, UNC Pembroke bested West No. 2 King in the other semifinal, 25-18, to advance to face Lander in the final. 

Lander emerged with a 29-9 victory over UNC Pembroke in the final to take home the first-ever Conference Carolinas Men's Wrestling Tournament crown. Newberry earned a 30-9 win over King to finish in third place.  Currently ranked No. 1 in the country at 174 pounds, Scott Joll of UNC Pembroke was selected as the Conference Carolinas Men's Wrestling Championship Upper-Weight Most Outstanding Wrestler after a strong Sunday. The No. 1 nationally-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, James Joplin of Lander was chosen as the Lower-Weight Most Outstanding Wrestler after a stellar Sunday.
