Six Meet Records Recorded on First Day of 2024 Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Championships
RESULTS | WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – It was a record-setting first day at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the 2024 Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Championships as three meet records fell.
The first record came in the women’s distance medley relay where North Greenville (Avery Shope, Emma Dennison, Kylie Futrell, Riley Nicholson) won the event in a record time of 12:40.20 which bested the previous record of 12:46.36 set by Converse last season.
The top two finishers in the men’s distance medley relay matched NGU with meet records as Southern Wesleyan (Grady Clark, Jaden Warner, Ethan Marchman, Drew Jones) won the event in 10:16.13 just ahead of Erskine (Angel Galan, Halen Button, LJ Price, Joey Tindale) who finished in 10:16.38. Both shattered Emmanuel’s record set last season of 10:26.24.
Not to be outdone, all three top finishers in the women’s 5,000m final broke the previous meet record led by conference champion Lauren Beatty of Converse who crossed the line in 17:46.23. Her teammate, Ashley Sosa, finished second in 17:49.08 and UNC Pembroke’s Moureen Kimaiyo was third in 17:53.50. The previous record belonged to Hannah Witt of King who ran 17:53.87 in 2013.
After five scored events, Converse leads the women’s standings with 74 points while Mount Olive sits atop the men’s standings with 61 points. Mount Olive is second in the women’s standings with 35 points with UNC Pembroke third with 25 points. On the men’s side, UNC Pembroke is second with 39 points followed by Belmont Abbey in third with 26 points.
The final day of the 2023 Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Championships gets underway on Monday, Feb. 19 at 10:30 a.m. with women’s shot put, women’s triple jump and men’s pole vault. The track events begin at 11:30 a.m. with the women’s mile.
