Converse Women, Mount Olive Men Claim 2024 Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Championships

RESULTS |  WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The 2024 Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships concluded on Monday afternoon with the Converse women and the Mount Olive men capturing titles at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It’s the first-ever track & field title for the Valkyries while the Trojans men’s program claimed a 10th title and eighth straight.

Converse was led by Women’s Track Athlete of the Year Lauren Beatty who scored 28 points with wins in the 5,000m (17:46.23) and the mile (5:13.58) as well as a second place finish in the women’s 3,000m (10:26.22). Her teammate Eseose Okoduwa also scored 28 points with wins in the 200m (25.26) and the long jump (5.59m) as well as a second place finish in the 60m (7.67).

Karla Hormazabal of Mount Olive earned the Women’s Field Athlete of the Year honors after placing first in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 12.24m (40-2.00) which is the 11th-best mark in NCAA Division II this season and a meet record. She was also seventh in the long jump (5.23m) and the high jump (1.45m).

Moureen Kimaiyo of UNC Pembroke was named the Women’s Freshman of the Year as she won the 3,000m with a meet record time of 10:17.79 and finished third in the 5,000m with a time of 17:53.50.

Brandon Morton of Converse earned the Women’s Coach of the Year award.

The Trojan men were led by repeat Field Athlete of the Year Kamden Johnson who tallied 20 points in the championship as he won the high jump with a mark of 2.00m (23-1.75) and the long jump with a mark of 7.05m (23-1.75). Johnson is the second student-athlete to earn the award in back-to-back seasons joining Lawrence Russell, Jr. of Barton who did so in 2018 and 2019.

Demarco Hernandez of Emmanuel was named Men’s Track Athlete of the Year as he won the 3,000m and placed second in the mile. He won the 3,000m in a meet record time of 8:29.79 and his mile time of 4:11.91 also bested the previous meet record.

Braylon Brooks of UNC Pembroke earned Men’s Freshman of the Year honors. He won the men’s 60m with a time of 6.85 and finished fifth in the 200m (22.30).

Earl Graves of Mount Olive was named the Men’s Coach of the Year.

Converse earned the women’s championship with 167 points, just one better than Mount Olive’s 166. UNC Pembroke placed third with 68 points followed by North Greenville (64) and Belmont Abbey (35) to round out the top five.

Mount Olive won the men’s championship with 164 points while UNC Pembroke placed second with 125. Belmont Abbey finished third with 83 points with North Greenville (53) and Southern Wesleyan (48) rounding out the top five.
