Conference Carolinas Tuesday Weekly Award Winners

  • Track Athlete of the Week
    Jason Hart, Mount Olive

    A sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, Jason Hart shattered the Mount Olive school record in the 200 meters and established an NCAA mark while competing at the Liberty Open this past Saturday.

    Hart crossed the line with a blistering pace of 21.48 seconds to secure first place. He holds the fastest time in Conference Carolinas this season and ranks second overall in the Southeast Region while also holding one of the best times in all of NCAA Division II. Hart has now earned weekly honors twice in the 2023-24 season. 

    Field Athlete of the Week
    Alex Smith-Fort'e, Mount Olive

    A native of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Alex Smith-Fort'e of Mount Olive achieved a personal best mark in the weight throw following a toss of 19.21 meters (63-0.25 feet) on his final attempt at the Liberty Open. 

    Smith-Fort'e reached the NCAA provisional mark for a third straight week and placed third overall in a field of over 50 competitors. He currently sits 20th overall in NCAA Division II in the weight throw while being the only athlete in the Southeast Region to reach an NCAA Standard in the weight throw.

  • Track Athlete of the Week
    Chianel Asoburuenwu, Mount Olive

    A sophomore from Raleigh, North Carolina, Chianel Asoburuenwu of Mount Olive claimed a pair of podium finishes and hit an NCAA Standard while competing this past Saturday at the Liberty Open. 

    Asoburuenwu finished second overall in the 60-meter dash after crossing the line with a time of 7.58 seconds, which is an NCAA provisional mark. Asoburuenwu also competed in the 200 meters and placed third overall with a personal record of 24.95 seconds, which is the second-best time in Mount Olive history. She continues to hold the fastest time in Conference Carolinas in both events while ranking third in the region.

    This is the third weekly honor of the season for Asoburuenwu.

    Field Athlete of the Week
    Karla Hormazabal, Mount Olive

    A native of Orlando, Florida, Karla Hormazabal of Mount Olive produced a pair of top-10 finishes at the Liberty Open this past weekend. 

    Hormazabal registered a second-place finish after reaching a distance of 11.79 meters (38-8.25 feet) in the triple jump. In the high jump, Hormazabal placed 10th overall after clearing 1.47 meters (4-9.75 feet) in the high jump.

    This is the third weekly honor of the 2023-24 campaign for Hormazabal.

  • Player of the Week
    Kylie Emanuele, Mount Olive

    A senior from Corona, California, Kylie Emanuele had a stellar opening week to the season after posting a .643 batting average (9-of-14) with three home runs, three doubles, 13 RBIs and 10 runs scored. She tallied four multi-hit performances and a trio of multi-RBI games in six starts at third base.

    Last Thursday, Emanuele finished 2-for-4 with a solo homer, three RBIs, one walk and two runs scored in a sweep over St. Andrews. In the round-robin tournament this past weekend, Emanuele went 7-of-10 at the plate with two home runs, 10 RBIs and eight runs scored. In game one on Sunday against UVA Wise, Emanuele registered six RBIs in the top of the first inning after delivering a two-run double and a grand slam.

    Pitcher of the Week
    Hannah Killough, Mount Olive 

    A senior right-handed pitcher, Hannah Killough Mount Olive produced a 2-0 record in the circle after tossing a pair of complete-game shutouts, including a no-hitter in the season-opening game last week. In 10.0 innings pitched, she boasted a 0.00 ERA with 21 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .032 batting average in two starts.

    Last Thursday, Killough became the all-time Mount Olive record holder with four career no-hitters at UMO in an 8-0 victory over St. Andrews. She registered nine strikeouts while surrendering two walks in 5.0 scoreless innings pitched while retiring the side in order four times. Over the weekend, Killough delivered another complete-game shutout over 5.0 innings (99 pitches) while tallying an impressive 12 strikeouts in a 28-0 win over UVA Wise.

    Player of the Week: Kylie Emanuele, Mount Olive

  • Player of the Week
    Thomas Collins, Emmanuel

    A junior infielder from Newnan, Georgia, Thomas Collins of Emmanuel started the 2024 season strongly by going 10-of-15 (.667) from the plate. Collins had three or more hits in all three games against Mississippi College. He finished the weekend with a slugging percentage of 1.267 and an on-base percentage of .688. 

    Collins closed out his opening weekend with seven runs scored to go along with four RBIs. He had three home runs in the first three games of the series that officially closed on Monday, Feb. 5 with one more game that was not included in this week's Player of the Week voting. 

    Pitcher of the Week
    Jake Inman, UNC Pembroke

    A senior left-handed pitcher from Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina, Jake Inman of UNC Pembroke was stellar out of the bullpen in its season-opening 16-4 road win over USC Aiken. 

    Inman pitched six innings, striking out seven while also allowing just two hits. Inman did not walk a batter and gave up no runs in the UNC Pembroke victory.

  • Wrestler of the Week
    Scott Joll, UNC Pembroke

    A graduate student from Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, Scott Joll of UNC Pembroke remained undefeated on the season with two huge wins this past week.

    The top-ranked wrestler in the country at 174 pounds, Joll first defeated Osmar Rivera-Rosas of Limestone by pinfall (1:04) last week. He followed that up by besting Seth Thomas of Mount Olive by tech fall (17-1). The win at 174 pounds helped UNC Pembroke to a 28-12 win over Mount Olive that allowed the Braves to claim at least a share of the Conference Carolinas East Division title and hosting duties for the inaugural Conference Carolinas Men's Wrestling Championship. 

    Joll is currently 23-0 on the season with 14 pins and five tech falls. He has now claimed weekly honors twice in the 2023-24 season.
