Top-Seeded UNC Pembroke Wins Overtime Thriller to Capture Atlantic Casualty Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball Championship

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The top two seeds in the 2024 Atlantic Casualty Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Championship squared off in a back-and-forth contest that saw top seed UNC Pembroke defeat second seed Emmanuel, 82-81, in overtime.
UNC Pembroke jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the opening eight minutes before the Lions used a 16-2 run, which included scoring 10 straight, to take a 28-24 lead. UNC Pembroke chipped away and evened the score at 35 at the half.
The second half was played within six points as the Lions held the advantage the majority of the half until a late UNC Pembroke run. The Braves scored seven straight points and nine of 11 to take a 71-69 lead with three minutes remaining. Emmanuel took a 73-71 lead with a Tavarus Webb basket and a pair of free throws from Chris Dees. However, Elijah Cobb made a layup with 40 seconds remaining to eventually send the contest to overtime.
KJ Jones II came up with a steal and dunk to give Emmanuel a 79-76 lead with 2:50 remaining in overtime. The teams traded points as the Lions held an 81-80 lead in the final minute of the extra frame. Nygell Verdier made a layup to give UNC Pembroke an 82-81 lead with 14 seconds remaining before the Lions last attempt was off the mark, giving the Braves their first Conference Carolinas men's basketball tournament since rejoining the league. UNC Pembroke previously won five titles as a member of Conference Carolinas in its NAIA era (1981, 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1990).
The Braves with the victory earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. The field will be announced on Sunday night on NCAA.com at 11 p.m. (ET).
