Conference Carolinas Makes Strong Statement on Opening Day of NCAA Division II Men’s Wrestling Championships
WICHITA, Kan. – It was a strong opening day for Conference Carolinas at the 2024 NCAA Division II Men’s Wrestling Championships at Hartman Arena.
Conference Carolinas has five different wrestlers remaining in line to claim a national title in their weight class.
In the 125-pound weight class, top-seeded James Joplin of Lander will face fourth-seeded Jaxson Rohman of Augustana in the semifinals on Saturday. In the 133-pound weight class, top-seeded Gabe Hixenbaugh of Montevallo will take on fifth-seeded Reece Barnhardt of the University of Mary.
Fourth-seeded Zeth Brower of Lander advanced to the semifinals of the 149-pound bracket. He will face Cody Thompson of the Colorado School of Mines in the semifinals. Top-seeded David Hunsberger of Lander will battle fifth-seeded Hunter Jump of Central Oklahoma in the 165-pound bracket semifinals.
Fourth-seeded Juan Edmond-Holmes of Lander will take on Zach Peterson of Augustana in the 285-pound bracket semifinals on Saturday morning.
The top eight wrestlers in each of the 10 weight classes earn All-American honors. After the first day of competition, including the five still in contention for a national title, a total of 10 Conference Carolinas wrestlers will end their efforts as All-Americans with Elijah Lusk (133) and Anthony Yacovetti (184) of Lander, Devan Moore of Newbery (149) and Keegan Roberson (157) and Scott Joll (174) of UNC Pembroke all still wrestling for placement on Saturday.
Lander concluded day one in second place as a team. The Bearcats (54.5) narrowly sit behind Central Oklahoma (59.5) in the standings entering the final day on Saturday.
