DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Francis Marion earned a spot in the NCAA Southeast Region championship game with an extra innings win over host and regional second seed North Georgia. The Patriots plated one run in the ninth to defeat the defending national champions.

Second seed North Georgia took a 1-0 lead following a leadoff double and two-out single in the second inning. The score remained the same until the third-seeded Patriots evened the score in the sixth inning. Madalyn White laced a one-out triple before scoring on an Emily Konz fielder’s choice.

North Georgia put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the sixth, but Francis Marion pitcher Alyssa Poston got the final out to end the threat. Neither team threatened in the seventh, sending the contest to extra innings.

The contest remained knotted at one until the ninth inning when Konz worked a leadoff walk. Following two outs, Konz stole second and scored on a Katie Smith single. Poston made that standup as she worked around a one-out single to retire the side and give Francis Marion the victory.

The win advances the Patriots to the regional championship on Saturday, May 11. Francis Marion will take on the winner of North Georgia and Flagler at 12:00 p.m. The Patriots need one win to take the regional championship while North Georgia or Flagler will need to beat Francis Marion twice.
