GREENVILLE, S.C. - We look to spotlight those on our member campuses who are helping young people with their faith. Conference Carolinas believes that only when sport is properly directed towards the development and formation of the whole person in body, mind, and soul, can each student-athlete realize her or his full potential and to leave lives of integrity, success professionally and become responsible citizens.
As institutions founded with a focus on faith, service, or both, we share common values and strive to attain excellence and virtue in all that we do
Today, we look at Chris Maxwell from Emmanuel University.
Where did you go to undergrad/grad school? Emmanuel University, then MDiv at Luther Rice
Did you play a sport in college? Basketball in high school and only intramurals in college
How long have you been a chaplain? I pastored a church in Orlando FL for 19 years and became Director of Spiritual Life at Emmanuel University in 2006
What is your favorite part of your job? Time with students
In college what did you envision yourself doing for a career? Pastoring and writing
What made you choose the school you work at now? I would speak at Emmanuel regularly when I was pastoring in Orlando, so they stayed in touch with me through the years. When they offered me the job it was difficult to leave Evangel Assembly, but I wanted to be a positive influence in this generation.
What is one thing people don’t know about you? Some people do not know I travel around the world and speak for a pharmaceutical company about living with epilepsy.
What makes Conference Carolinas a great conference to work with? I enjoy the people and the climate of kindness.
What advice would you give current student athletes? My 12th book, Thinks We’ve Handed Down: Twelve Letters I Leave for You, comes out October 1. Each title offers thoughts on what I want to pass down to them. One chapter reminds them that they are the artwork of God.
What advice would you give to graduating student athletes? Believe in the big and be faithful in the little.

What is your most memorable moment while working at your school? As I watch students graduate and remember the difficulties they endured.

What is your favorite hobby? Going to ball games. Writing. They are both tied for 1st.
What is the public summary of Emmanuel’s religious values and traditions? Emmanuel’s new theme is “where we meet God together.”
