SWU, NGU advance through preliminary sites to 2025 Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Championship final site

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Two preliminary sites of the 2025 Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Championship were completed on Saturday with Southern Wesleyan University and North Greenville University advancing to the final site.

No. 8 Southern Wesleyan def. No. 11 Belmont Abbey 3-2
Southern Wesleyan took the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-17 behind 14 kills and a .220 attack percentage in the second set and a solid defense. However, Belmont Abbey fought back, winning the next two sets 25-21 and 25-22 to force a fifth set. In the fifth set, the Warriors hit .400 while holding Belmont Abbey to a .107 attack percentage to take the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

Kaylon Chapman and Haley Karson led a balanced Southern Wesleyan offensive attack with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Defensively, Calie Covey led the way with 35 digs while Katie Fulton added 15. For Belmont Abbey, Jordan Medina posted a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs while Katie Brookins led the way with 13 kills. Emma Youngblood handed out 43 assists and added 15 digs.

No. 8 Southern Wesleyan def. No. 5 Lees-McRae 3-2
Lees-McRae got off to a hot start, taking the first two sets 26-24 and 25-22. In the second set, Southern Wesleyan held off two match points and won the set 28-26. The Warriors then won the fourth set 25-22, forcing another fifth set. The score was even at nine before the Warriors gradually pulled away to take the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.

Chapman led the way for the Warriors with 19 kills and 18 digs. Megan Gilliland and Briley Wolff added 10 kills apiece while Covey and Fulton paced the defense with 23 digs each. Fulton added 23 assists. For Lees-McRae, Sydney Stigler posted 20 kills and 22 digs while Clara Duarte added 19 kills. Izadora Rosin handed out 55 assists and added 20 digs for the Bobcats.

No. 9 King def. No. 10 Mount Olive 3-1
The opening two sets went to extra points as King took the opening set 28-26 before Mount Olive responded with a 26-24 win in the second frame. The Tornado held off a 5-0 Mount Olive run that evened the score at 23 as King scored the final three points to take the first set. Mount Olive returned the favor in the second set, scored the final three points for the win. King then took the next two sets 25-22 and 25-23 to advance.

Isabel Krick and Princess Emma Oluwa led the way for King with 12 kills apiece. Oluwa added 10 digs while Gracia Love added 10 kills and 14 digs. Kylie Love added 24 assists and 14 digs while Amaya Hall added 19 assists and 16 digs. Olivia Melvin led Mount Olive with 14 kills while Sam Widelski and Kaitlyn Landis added 10 kills with Widelski accounting for 16 digs.

No. 4 North Greenville vs. No. 9 King
North Greenville turned a mid-set deficit into a lead and eventually took the opening set 25-19. The Trailblazer defense clamped down in the second set, holding King to a negative hitting percentage in the 25-10 victory. The third set was tight, but North Greenville scored the final three points to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.

Samantha Ball and Peyton Taylor led North Greenville with eight kills and 12 digs apiece. Love led King with eight kills and 11 sigs. Morse posted 16 digs for the Tornado.

The final preliminary site at UNC Pembroke competes on Sunday with Shorter University taking on Barton College at 11:00 a.m. before the winner faces the host Braves at 1:30 p.m.

Southern Wesleyan will face North Greenville in the first quarterfinal on Friday, November 21 at 5:00 p.m.
