Last second basket pushes UNCP into NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Southeast Region semifinal

COLUMBUS, Ga. – UNC Pembroke advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Southeast Regional with a win over Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday evening. The Braves used an offensive rebound and layup with 1.9 seconds remaining to defeat the Railsplitters 90-88.

The final six minutes was played within three points following a UNC Pembroke 79-74 advantage. The Braves held the slim lead until Lincoln Memorial scored five straight points to take an 88-85 lead. A JaJuan Carr layup and later an Elijah Cobb free throw knotted the score at 88 in the final minute.

Following a Railsplitter offensive foul with 33 seconds remaining, the Braves played for the final shot. The first attempt was off the mark, but Josh Berenbaum collected the offensive rebound under the basket, took a dribble and made a layup with 1.9 seconds remaining. Lincoln Memorial's desperation heave was off the mark, giving UNC Pembroke the 90-88 victory.

In the first half, UNC Pembroke got off to a hot start, taking a 17-9 lead in the opening 10 minutes before the Railsplitters scored eight straight points to tie the contest. The Braves continue to hold the advantage until the final five minutes of the half when Lincoln Memorial took a 31-27 lead. However, the Braves came back to hold a 41-37 lead at the half.

Bradlee Haskell led five UNC Pembroke scorers in double figures with 21 points. Dallas Gardner followed with 19 points, going 12-for-13 from the free throw line. He added seven rebounds while Ant Abraham added 13 points. Berenbaum scored 12 points and Carr chipped in with 11 points.

Elyjah Freeman led Lincoln Memorial with 33 points and six rebounds. Wes Enis added 19 points and six rebounds while Mahmoud Bangura scored 12 points to go along with seven rebounds.

UNC Pembroke advances to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Semfinals where they will face host and top seed Columbus State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Sunday night in Columbus, Georgia.
