GREENVILLE, S.C. – In the second round of the 2025 Atlantic Casualty Insurance Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Championship, the top seeds advanced with home wins. Barton College, King University and Young Harris College all advanced Friday’s quarterfinals at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
No. 4 Young Harris No. 9 Mount Olive
Young Harris scored the first nine points and led 11-2 before the Trojans started to chip away at the deficit. Mount Olive pulled within four, but Young Harris extended the lead back to 21-12. The Mountain Lions held that advantage, 37-28 at the half. Young Harris gradually extended their lead in the second half, stretching their advantage to as many as 20 points in the 88-71 win.
Karl Chavis led Young Harris with 29 points while Carl Cleveland followed with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Raul Perez led Mount Olive with 17 points, and Chase Dawson added 14 points.
Young Harris advances to the quarterfinals and will face fifth seed King on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
No. 5 King defeats No. 11 Erskine 97-85
In what was a tight contest, King used an 8-0 run to break a tie and take a 15-7 lead in the early going. Erskine fought back to take the lead before the team traded the advantage until a 12-2 run to close the half gave King a 40-31 advantage. Erskine fought back early in the second half and evened the score at 51 before the contest went back-and-forth. There were 11 ties and 10 lead changes in the contest, the majority coming in the final 10 minutes. The Tornado used a 10-2 run to gain control with three minutes remaining and ultimately winning the game 97-85.
Jordan Akal led the Tornado with 35 points, six rebounds and four assists while Xavier Betancourt followed with 24 points. Mikhail Pocknett added 24 points, 17 rebounds and six assists. Jayden Byrd led Erskine with 32 points while Makayl Rakestraw added 14 points.
King advances to the quarterfinals and will face fourth seed Young Harris on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
No. 6 Barton defeats No. 7 Converse 83-67
The opening half was tight with the homestanding Bulldogs holding a 33-32 lead the break. Barton opened the second half on an 8-1 run to take a 41-33 two minutes into the half. The Bulldog advantage grew to 15 at 55-40 with 12 minutes remaining. Barton managed that lead to take the contest 83-67.
Shawn Nelson led Barton with 16 points, four rebounds, seven assists, four steals an two assists. Jeff Fortuny followed with 13 points while Marko Krtinic added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sean Quick-Streeter chipped in with 10 points. Joel Pullen led Converse with 17 points while Jay Mitchell added 13 points.
Barton advances to the quarterfinals and will face third seed Chowan University at 8:30 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
