King, Chowan advance to semifinals of the 2025 Atlantic Casualty Insurance Conference Carolinas Men's Basketball Championship

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2025 Atlantic Casualty Insurance Conference Carolinas Men’s Basketball Championship quarterfinals featured a pair of tight contests with King University and Chowan University pulling away late to book spots in Saturday’s semifinals.

No. 5 King defeats No. 4 Young Harris 80-69
Young Harris held a slight advantage through the majority of the first half until the Tornado closed the half on a run. King broke a 24-24 tie with a triple and held a 33-28 lead at the break. The Mountain Lions scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 35-33 lead. The Tornado then responded with 13 straight points to open up a 48-37 lead.

The King lead grew to 13 before eight straight Young Harris points as the Mountain Lions later pulled within 56-52. However, King answered with a 10-2 run, taking 66-54 lead, only to see Young Harris claw back again. Young Harris used an 11-2 run to pull within 68-65 with four minutes remaining. However, King pulled away and took the contest 80-69.

Mikhail Pocknett led five King scorers in double figures with 20 points and nine rebounds while Xavier Betancourt followed with 18 points. Karl Chavis led three Young Harris scorers in double figures with 18 points.

King advances to face top seed UNC Pembroke on Saturday at 5:15 p.m.

No. 3 Chowan defeats No. 6 Barton 86-76
Chowan stretched their lead to 21-13 midway through the first half, but Barton scored eight straight points to even the tally at 21. The Bulldogs followed that with a 9-0 run, taking a 30-23 lead. Chowan fought back to regain the lead in the final four minutes and held a 41-37 lead at the break.

Barton pulled within two on two different occasions in the second half, but Chowan gradually pulled away down the stretch. The Hawks took a 78-68 lead in the final three minutes and held off a late Bulldog rally to take the contest 86-76.

Daylan Askew led Chowan with 23 points and five assists while RJ Wilson posted 22 points and 10 rebounds. Shawn Nelson led Barton with 28 points and five assists.

Chowan advances to face second seed Emmanuel University on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
