DUNCAN, S.C. – The second day of the 2025 Conference Carolinas Softball Championship saw North Greenville University and Emmanuel University advance to Sunday’s semifinals. Francis Marion University and Barton College both worked their way through the loser’s bracket to stay alive.
Eighth seed North Greenville topped fourth seed the University of Mount Olive 12-4 in the opening game of the day. The Trailblazers plated five runs on home runs from Lexie Metcalf and Sydney Price in the second inning before a three-run double from Virginia Bishop in the third inning gave North Greenville an 8-1 lead. Mount Olive scored a pair of runs in the third and another in the fourth to pull within 9-4, but the Trailblazes tacked onto their lead. North Greenville ended the 12-4 win with three runs in the sixth.
In the other quarterfinal contest, 10th seed Emmanuel narrowly topped third seed Barton. Emmanuel took a 1-0 lead on a groundout in the seventh inning, but Ronetta Gurley lifted a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, sending the game to extra innings. Emmanuel started the eighth with four runs in the top of the inning. Mount Olive scored a pair, but that was it as Emmanuel took the game 5-3.
Emmanuel and North Greenville start play on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to Monday’s championship. The loser will have to play again Sunday evening.
Top seed Francis Marion survived a pair of elimination games while second seed UNC Pembroke staved off elimination once but ultimately fell to Barton in their second contest of the day.
Francis Marion trailed sixth seed Southern Wesleyan University 2-0 in the fifth as the Warriors scored a run on a Maddie Crouch double in the second and an Amberly Way home run in the fifth. The Patriots then scored three runs in the sixth, two unearned to take a 3-2 lead. Jenna Walling made that standup, giving Francis Marion the 3-2 win.
Following a weather delay, the Patriots jumped ahead of fourth seed Mount Olive with a pair of runs in the first inning. Francis Marion extended their lead to 4-0 with a pair of run-scoring singles in the third inning. That was all Walling needed as she tossed at five-hit shutout, giving Francis Marion the 4-0 victory.
UNC Pembroke topped fifth seed Chowan University 3-0 after a double from Alona Hannah scored one in the first and Sam Allred drove in another. Alex Serbio drove in another in the fourth with an infield single while Summer Bullard tossed a shutout to give the Braves the win.
The Braves then faced Barton in another elimination game as the Bulldogs jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning. The frame was highlighted by a two-run single from Ronnetta Gurley. UNC Pembroke fought back and evened the score with three runs in the fifth inning, two coming in on singles from Kaitlynn Hunt and Allred. Gracelyn Massey responded for Barton with a two-run double, putting the Bulldogs back on top. UNC Pembroke cut their deficit in half with a run in the sixth, but Barton matched that run in the top of the seventh. Following a leadoff single, Kierstin Cooper retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to give Barton the 6-4 win.
Francis Marion will now face Barton at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday in another elimination game. The winner of that contest will then face the loser of the first game of the day, North Greenville and Emmanuel at 5:00 p.m.
