MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – North Greenville University captured their first Conference Carolinas Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Sunday when they defeated Belmont Abbey College.
In what was a defensive battle, second seed Belmont Abbey jumped ahead with a goal five minutes in. However, the top-seeded Trailblazers answered with a goal with five minutes remaining in the first quarter, leaving the game knotted at one after 15 minutes.
Jackson Reich then posted a pair of goals early in the second quarter for North Greenville before three straight Jack Clough goals gave Belmont Abbey a 4-3 lead at the half.
Reich and Hayden Moffat tallied goals in the third quarter for North Greenville, giving the Trailblazers a 5-4 lead going to the final period. Clough evened the score for Belmont Abbey with a goal with 5:46 remaining.
However, Aydan Sizemore found the back of the net for North Greenville with 3:34 remaining, giving the Trailblazers the 6-5 victory.
North Greenville earns the automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The selections will be announced on Sunday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m.
