DUNCAN, S.C. – Top seed Francis Marion University won their third straight Conference Carolinas Softball Championship on Monday with a pair of wins over eighth seed North Greenville University.
The opening game of the championship was a pitcher’s duel between Kylie Rast of North Greenville and Jenna Walling of Francis Marion. The score remained scoreless through seven innings with only four hits from the Patriots and two by the Trailblazers. Francis Marion then got the offense going in the eighth with three straight bunts followed by a two-run double from Rylee Gray. The Patriots added another before Walling retired the side in order in the eighth to give Francis Marion the 5-0 win and force a winner-take-all championship game.
North Greenville jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the first inning on singles from Virginia Bishop and Ansley Fowler. Francis Marion evened the score with a pair of runs on a Samantha Turnage pinch-hit single in the second inning. Paige Strickland gave the Patriots a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly in the third inning before Francis Marion added three runs in the fourth inning. An error plated one before Strickland drove in two more to give Francis Marion a 6-2 lead. That was all Alyssa Poston need as she didn’t allow a run after the first inning to give Francis Marion the 6-2 win.
Francis Marion earns the automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Softball Championship. The selections will be announced on Monday, May 5 at 10:00 a.m.
