GREENVILLE, S.C. – North Greenville University claimed The Body, Mind & Soul Dr. Alan Patterson Cup for the 2024-25 academic year.
In its seventh year, The Body, Mind & Soul Dr. Alan Patterson Cup is the ultimate comprehensive conference award, recognizing the member with the best average ranking when combining the Hawn Cup, the Sharp Award and the Messick Award.
North Greenville finished in the top five of the conference in the Messick Award to capture their third Body, Mind & Soul Dr. Alan Patterson Cup. The Trailblazers finished second in the overall Messick Award while finishing third in the women’s Messick Award.
The Body, Mind & Soul Dr. Alan Patterson Cup is named after the former Conference Carolinas Commissioner. Patterson served for 32 years as the Commissioner of Conference Carolinas before retiring after the 2018-19 academic year.
As Commissioner of Conference Carolinas, Patterson championed that classroom success and sportsmanship should be valued equally with competitive success.
The Joby Hawn Cup is the annual all-sports award for Conference Carolinas. Hawn Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season finish and the number of participating teams in each sport. The institution that finishes in first place is awarded points equal to the number of institutions that sponsor the sport. The institution that finishes in second place is awarded one less point than first place, the institution that finishes in third place is awarded one less point than second place and the process continues until the institution that finished in last place is awarded one point.
In addition, bonus points are awarded to the tournament champion (two bonus points) and runner-up finisher (one bonus point). The total points earned from all sports for each institution is divided by the total possible points (excluding bonus points) for each institution based on sports sponsorship for each participating sport. Institutions are ranked by the resulting ratio of points earned to possible points.
The Joby Hawn Cup is named after H.C. "Joby" Hawn, who in 1962 became the first full-time Commissioner of what was then known as the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) and now Conference Carolinas. Following his retirement from the league in 1976, Conference Carolinas began awarding the Hawn Cup annually in his honor.
UNC Pembroke collected the overall Joby Hawn Cup for the 2024-25 academic year. The Braves also captured the women’s Hawn Cup with Converse University taking the men’s Hawn Cup.
The Conference Carolinas Directors of Athletics implemented the process by which the Conference Carolinas Messick Sportsmanship Awards are determined. A student-athlete and coach from each institution vote separately upon the sportsmanship of all conference competitors. Each institution then submits those votes to the conference office where the averages are then calculated to decide the winner for each conference-sponsored sport.
The Team Messick Sportsmanship Awards are named after John D. Messick, who was the President of former conference member East Carolina from 1947-59. Messick truly championed sportsmanship and even wrote a book entitled, "Personality and Character Development."
Belmont Abbey College won the 2024-25 overall and women’s Conference Carolinas Messick Sportsmanship Awards while Southern Wesleyan University won the men’s award.
The Allan Sharp Award is presented annually to the Conference Carolinas member institution having the highest graduation rate of student-athletes as determined by the faculty athletics representatives.
The late Allan Sharp served for over 20 years as the Atlantic Christian/Barton Faculty Athletics Representative. Dr. Sharp championed the role of athletics as an educational activity and the importance of each student-athlete performing at the same level of excellence in the classroom.
Emmanuel University was named the 2024-25 recipient of the prestigious Allan Sharp Award.
