Belmont Abbey, North Greenville open 2025 NCAA Baseball Championship with wins

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The 2025 NCAA Baseball Championship started with a pair of Conference Carolinas teams taking wins. Host, and second seed Belmont Abbey College scored four runs in the final three innings to take the opening game while North Greenville University scored three in the ninth to earn the opening win.

Taking on seventh seed Carson-Newman University, Belmont Abbey jumped ahead on a Connor Tucker double in the first inning. However, the Eagles responded with a run in the second inning to even the score and added three on a home run in the third to take a 4-1 lead.

A bases loaded hit by pitch plated a run for Belmont Abbey in the seventh before home runs from Tucker and Joe Whitaker evened the score in the eighth. In the ninth, Jake Bidoglio started the inning with a pinch-hit single before Carter Bass pinch ran. He scored on a Matthew Fattore double, giving Belmont Abbey the 5-4 win.

Belmont Abbey now faces third seed Lenoir-Rhyne at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

In the other regional hosted by Catawba College, fifth seed North Greenville University jumped ahead of fourth seed Young Harris College with three runs in the first inning. Alton Gyselman drove in two with a single for the Trailblazers in the first inning. The Mountain Lions answered with a run on a balk in the bottom of the first inning. Jeremy Begore then evened the score for Young Harris with a two-run home run in the third inning.

NGU VS. YHC BOX SCORE

The score remained the same until the top of the ninth when Gideon Antle drove in three with a double to give North Greenville a 6-3 lead. Young Harris threatened with a pair of runners in the ninth, but the Trailblazers got the final two outs to take the contest.

Young Harris will face eighth seed Lander University at 3:00 p.m. in an elimination game on Friday while North Greenville will take on top seed Catawba at 6:00 p.m.
