Riveting second day of 2025 Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship

GASTONIA, N.C. – The second day of the 2025 Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship featured four tight contests, including the top seed falling. Emmanuel University, North Greenville University, Young Harris College and Belmont Abbey College all moved into the winner’s bracket.

No. 8 Emmanuel defeats No. 1 Francis Marion 15-8
Emmanuel started the day with an upset of top seed Francis Marion University. Coming off of a play-in game victory, the Lions erupted for 15 runs on 16 hits to top the Patriots 15-8. Landon Morkis and Hayden Beall both laced home runs for the Lions, both collected three hits and drove in three. Francis Marion jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, but Emmanuel scored two in the third and added five in the fifth.

Emmanuel scored seven runs over the final three innings to put the game out of reach. Francis Marion scored four in the ninth inning, including Charlie Bussey III’s second home run of the game. Brayden Pooler tossed six and one-thirds innings in relief and didn’t allow a hit until his final inning, holding the Patriots without a hit from the end of the second inning until the ninth.

No. 4 North Greenville defeats No. 5 UNC Pembroke 3-2
UNC Pembroke grabbed the lead in the top of the first inning on a Hayden Davis sacrifice fly, but North Greenville when Gideon Antle drove in Bryce Roddey with a single through the left side in the bottom of the inning. The Trailblazers took a 2-1 lead on a Landon Peavy home run in the second inning.

The score remained the same until UNC Pembroke’s Isaias Villarreal drove in Jake Bradley in the seventh to even the score at 2-2. Antle started the bottom of the ninth with a single for North Greenville before moving to second on a wild pitch. Following a sacrifice bunt, Alton Gyselman drove him in with a single, giving North Greenville the 3-2 victory.

No. 2 Young Harris defeats No. 7 Mount Olive 11-10 (F/10)
A bases loaded walk gave Young Harris a 1-0 lead in the third inning before the University Mount Olive grabbed the lead in the fourth inning with three runs, highlighted by a Jakhari Howard two-run home run. Young Harris evened the score with runs in the fourth and fifth innings as a Kade Smallwood single evened the tally at 3-3 in the fifth. The teams traded runs in the sixth before Mount Olive erupted for six runs in the seventh.

Jon Howard drove in two with a double before Jakhari Howard laced another home run, this one a three-run blast that put the Trojans ahead 10-4. Young Harris continued to claw back as Smallwood started the bottom of the inning with a home run and Kyle Chatham cut the Mountain Lion deficit to 10-6 with a run-scoring single. Jonny Smith laced a grand slam in the eighth inning for Young Harris to even the score at 10. The score remained the same until the 10th when Kyle Chatham rolled a hit up the middle that scored Jayden Carbonell-Smith and gave the Mountain Lions the 11-10 win.

No. 3 Belmont Abbey defeats No. 6 Barton 8-5
The nightcap was a see-saw affair between third seed Belmont Abbey and sixth seed Barton College. Each team scored one run in the first inning and Braton added another in the second inning. Belmont Abbey plated a pair on a Matthew Fattore home run to take a 3-2 lead. Barton regained a 5-3 lead with three runs in the fourth inning on a pair of run-scoring singles and a groundout.

Joe Whitaker added another for the Crusaders in the bottom of the fourth before Belmont Abbey evened the tally in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to even the score at five. The Crusaders took an 8-5 lead in the eighth with three runs, highlighted by run-scoring singles from Whitaker and Carter DuHaime. Drew Stegura then retired the side in order to give Belmont Abbey the 8-5 win.
