COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Belmont Abbey battled third-ranked and No. 3 seed UCLA tough, but the Bruins proved to be took much for the sixth-seeded Crusaders, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-19), in the quarterfinals of the 2025 NCAA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship at the Covelli Center.
The 58 points were the highest cumulative total in its three-match tournament history for The Abbey, which closes its season at 17-9. The Crusaders finished the match hitting .184, compared to a blistering .455 by UCLA.
Caden Day tied a school record for kills in an NCAA Tournament match with 11, hitting .182, while Ryan Charles added seven on a .455 percentage. He also registered a team-high six digs and the only service ace. Joseph Morris dished out 23 assists and had two blocks.
Jibriel Elhaddad and Zach Puentes added five kills each with Elhaddad being credited for two blocks.
SET 1
- Belmont Abbey trailed 9-8 before the Bruins went on a 7-2 run to make the score 16-9.
- UCLA's lead was 18-11 when the Crusaders tallied four straight points to force a timeout at 18-15.
- The teams traded back-to-back points for a 20-17 margin before three attack errors and an ace created set point. Charles saved the first with a kill before the set ended 25-18.
- Belmont Abbey hit just .040 (9k-8e-25a), while UCLA connected at a .407 clip (15k-4e-27a).
- Charles and Day each had three kills during the set, with Joseph Morris dishing out five assists.
SET 2
- The teams were tied at 4-4 before the Bruins tallied three straight points.
- Trailing 11-7, the Crusaders answered with its own 3-0 run, then closed even more to 14-13.
- The media timeout came 15-13 and was followed by a BAC point before at Belmont Abbey stayed close back-to-back Bruin points.
- Another surge by UCLA -- four of the next five points -- forced a Crusader time out at 19-15.
- Belmont Abbey trailed 22-20 and 23-21 but the Bruins used a kill and service ace to close out the set 25-21.
- Elhaddad tallied four kills in the set with Day adding three more kills to his total.
- The 21 points were second-highest set total among the nine now played in NCAA Tournament action.
SET 3
- The Crusaders won the opening point for the second straight set, but UCLA tallied two points in a row.
- The Abbey then scored six of the next nine points to open its biggest lead at 7-4. The Crusaders led a majority of the set, including 15-13 at the media timeout.
- A 5-1 run sent UCLA back in front 18-16, with the Crusaders staying even to 21-19. But the Bruins closed out the match with four straight points.
- Day finished the set with five kills, while Puentes heated up with four.
- The Abbey hit .417 in the set (14k-4e-24a), though the Bruins connected at a .538 rate.
