University of Mount Olive Takes Overall Hawn Cup Lead After Strong Winter Campaign

High Point, NC> The University of Mount Olive has taken over the lead in the Conference Carolinas Joby Hawn Cup with the completion of the winter sports league championships.  The Hawn Cup is awarded to the league member that shows the highest rating of excellence in conference-sponsored sports.  The Hawn Cup is tallied after each sport season (fall, winter, & spring) and then awarded each year in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the former Carolinas Conference.

Conference Carolinas will name a winner for just the women’s sports, a winner for just the men’s sports, and then an overall winner using both the men and women’s combined tallies.  Hawn Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion (2 bonus points) and runner-up finisher (1 bonus point), based on the number of participating teams in each sport.

For the individual women’s cup, the top two spots remained the same.  Belmont Abbey held-on to the lead tallying 41 points for a .854 rating.  The Crusaders initial lead can be credited to their championship in women’s volleyball and runner-up finish  in women’s soccer.   The Abbey is followed by King who took the cross-country championship and runner-up finish in the women’s indoor track & field championship to total 40.5 points. Mount Olive is in third with 37.5 points and a .781 rating.

Mount Olive jumped to the top spot for the individual men’s cup.  The Trojans climbed from a tie for second after the fall season to vault to the winter lead.  By taking the men’s indoor track & field championship along with their earlier men’s cross country title, Mount Olive totals 30.5 points with a .897 rating. Lurking close behind is second-ranked Limestone and third-place King.  The Saints won the men’s basketball championship to build to 27.5 points while King finished as the basketball championship runner-up to tally 25 points and a .735 mark.

For the overall tally, Mount Olive also holds the winter top-spot with 68 points and .829 rating.  The Trojans jumped from third to first following titles in both the men’s and women’s indoor track & field championships.  They also gained points with their women’s basketball runner-up finish. King dropped one position into second place although runner-up finishes in men’s basketball and women’s indoor track & field showed their fight to tally 65.5 points.  Limestone moved-up two spots overall and into third with championships in both men’s & women’s basketball as they lurk closely with 58 points and a .707 rating.

Four teams improved at least two spots from fall to winter (Mount Olive, Limestone, North Greenville, and Erskine) with Lees-McRae also improving one spot.  Overall ratings for all teams were: Mount Olive .829, King .799, Limestone .707, Belmont Abbey .689, Barton .585, North Greenville .500, Erskine .478, Pfeiffer .410, Lees-McRae .372 and Converse at .344 respectively.
