High Point, NC> Mount Olive College swept
the Conference Carolinas Joby Hawn Cup with the
completion of the recent league spring championships. The
Hawn Cup is awarded to the league member that shows the highest
rating of excellence in all men’s conference-sponsored
sports, all women’s conference-sponsored sports, and both the
men’s and women’s conference-sponsored sports combined.
The Hawn Cup is tallied after each sport season (fall, winter,
& spring) and then awarded each year in honor of former
Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the
former Carolinas Conference.
This is the second year that the Hawn Cup is comprised of three
different awards which include: the women’s sports award, the
men’s sports award, and the overall cup winner (combining
both the men & women’s results). Hawn Cup points
are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season
finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion (2 pt.)
and runner-up finishers (1pt.). Men's & women’s golf,
men's and women's cross country, and men’s and women’s
track & field are the only conference sponsored sports in which
points are determined solely by conference tournament finish.
Mount Olive College came from the third-place position in the
Hawn Cup standings after the completion of the winter basketball
seasons by having a terrific spring campaign to take the overall
Hawn Cup title. With the highest rating of .844 among league
members, Mount Olive claims their first Hawn Cup since membership
affiliation in 1988. The Trojans also become the second
winning institution to take the individual men’s cup the
women’s cup and overall award to sweep all three honors.
Mount Olive took bonus points in five of the 11 spring
sports. Spring championship titles in baseball, men’s
tennis, men’s track & field, and women’s track
& field with runner-up finishes in men’s volleyball and
women’s golf were key for the Trojans to make the leap up the
league charts. Second place tournament finishes in women’s
cross-country and men’s basketball also contributed earlier
in the year.
Last year’s Hawn Cup winner, Queens University of
Charlotte, finished second in the overall standings. The
Royals took three tournament titles and two runner-up finishes for
the year. Tournament Champions for Queens were women’s
cross country, men’s cross country, and women’s golf
while runner-ups included women’s volleyball, and
women’s tennis.
King College finished third overall with a .662 rating. In
their first year of conference membership, the Tornado came into
the league and won the softball title while also taking runner-up
finishes in men’s cross country and men’s track &
field.
Limestone finishes in fourth place overall with a rating of
.656. Erskine, Lees-McRae, and Belmont Abbey and were close
behind with ratings of .572, .567, and .511
correspondingly. Rounding out the schools in order were
Pfeiffer & Coker .497 (tied), Barton .467, North Greenville
.401 and Converse .209 respectively.
Mount Olive also took the individual titles in the men’s
conference- sponsored sports and the women’s conference-
sponsored sports. This is the second year for both of these
new awards and also the second year the overall winner took all
three awards in the same year. The men’s top three
teams were Mount Olive, King, & Queens while the women’s
top three teams were Mount Olive, Queens, and Limestone.
