High Point, NC> Belmont Abbey College has
taken an early lead in the Conference Carolinas Joby Hawn
Cup with the completion of all the fall sports league
championships. The Hawn Cup is awarded to the league member
that shows the highest rating of excellence in conference-sponsored
sports. The Hawn Cup is tallied after each sport season
(fall, winter, & spring) and then awarded each year in honor of
former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service
to the former Carolinas Conference.
Conference Carolinas is in its third year of using the format
where the Hawn Cup will have a winner for just the
women’s sports, a winner for just the
men’s sports, and then an overall winner
using both the men and women’s combined tallies. Hawn
Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular
season finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion (2
bonus points) and runner-up finisher (1 bonus point), based on the
number of participating teams in each sport.
For the individual women’s cup, Belmont Abbey has
jumped-out to the lead tallying 34 points for a 0.944 rating.
The Crusaders initial lead can be credited to their titles in
women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. The
Abbey is followed by King who took the cross-country championship
with 27.5 points. Lees-McRae is in third with 24 points and a 0.667
rating.
Limestone is the early frontrunner for the individual
men’s cup. The Saints have a 1/2 point advantage after
the Fall taking 19.5 points and a 0.886 rating following their
men’s soccer league title run. Mount Olive men’s
cross country put the Trojans in second place taking the Conference
Championship and a 0.864 Fall rating. They were followed closely by
Coker in third with 15.5 points and Barton and North Greenville who
are tied in fourth with 15 points.
For the overall tally, Belmont Abbey is also the early leader
followed by King and Mount Olive who are tied for second. Belmont
Abbey’s overall rating of .819 sets the bar with King &
Mount Olive at .698, Limestone .664, and Barton at .552.
Rounding out the schools in order were Erskine .526, Lees-McRae
.517, Queens .483, Coker & North Greenville both at .457,
Pfeiffer .405 and Converse at .389 respectively.
