High Point, NC> Lees-McRae College has taken
an early lead in the Conference Carolinas Joby Hawn
Cup with the completion of all the fall sports league
championships. The Hawn Cup is awarded to the league member
that shows the highest rating of excellence in conference-sponsored
sports. The Hawn Cup is tallied after each sport season
(fall, winter, & spring) and then awarded each year in honor of
former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service
to the former Carolinas Conference.
A new format has been adopted by Conference Carolinas for this
year’s Hawn Cup which will have a winner for just the
women’s sports, a winner for just the
men’s sports, and then an overall winner
using both the men and women’s combined tallies. Hawn
Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular
season finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion (2
bonus points) and runner-up finisher (1 bonus point), based on the
number of participating teams in each sport.
Lees-McRae currently leads in all three categories of the Joby
Hawn Cup standings. On the women’s side Lees-McRae has
tallied 29 points highlighted by their women’s volleyball
regular season and conference tournament championship titles.
They are followed by Queens with 28.5 points and Belmont Abbey in
third with 25.5.
For the men’s cup, Lees-McRae won both the regular season
soccer and tournament championships to gather two bonus points and
tally a perfect score of 20 out of 20 possible points. They
were followed closely by Queens, who won the cross-country
championship to help total 15 men’s points, and Belmont Abbey
with 14 points.
For the overall tally, the same three teams in Lees-McRae,
Queens, and Belmont Abbey stood atop the standings.
Lees-McRae’s overall rating of .942 sets the bar with Queens
at .837 and Belmont Abbey at .760. The Abbey helped their
cause having their women’s soccer win the regular season
title and coming in runner-up to Pfeiffer in the tournament
championship. Rounding out the schools in order were Erskine .654,
Mount Olive .635, Pfeiffer .529, Limestone .471, Converse .406, St.
Andrews .369, Barton .356, and Coker .269 respectively.
