GREENVILLE, S.C. – Conference Carolinas unveiled the winners of its 2020 Spring Scholar-Athletes of the Year on Thursday, April 23, 2020.
The Scholar-Athlete awards are presented annually to nominated individuals in each Conference Carolinas sponsored sport. The Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners are chosen by the Conference Carolinas Student-Athlete Affairs Committee.
To be considered, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or higher. In addition, the nominees for the award must have been named all-conference in their sport and chosen academic all-conference.
A senior from Hendersonville, N.C., King’s Casey Gilbert garnered the honor in softball. A first team all-conference selection in the 2019 season, Gilbert was a .323 hitter in her two years with the program. Gilbert owns a 3.71 grade-point average as an Exercise Science major.
Liam Maxwell collected the honor in men’s volleyball after a stellar senior campaign. A senior outside hitter out of Manahawkin, N.J., Maxwell was named the Conference Carolinas Men’s Volleyball Co-Offensive Player of the Year after leading all of men’s volleyball with 4.53 kills per set. Maxwell boasts a 3.85 grade-point average as a Mathematics major.
A senior from Kent, England, George Barfoot of Belmont Abbey picked up the prestigious honor in men’s tennis. Barfoot was named Conference Carolinas Men’s Tennis Player of the Week once this past season en route to five wins in the 2020 season overall. A four-time all-conference selection, Barfoot owns a 3.85 grade-point average as a Business Management major.
Limestone’s Camille Haus earned the honor in women’s tennis. The senior from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil collected 43 overall wins and 30 wins in total over conference opponents in singles in her career. The two-time Conference Carolinas Women’s Tennis Player of the Week during her career owns a 3.64 grade-point average as a Professional Communication major.
A senior from Stockholm, Sweden, Mount Olive’s Olle Ryberg has been named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s golf. Ryberg had three top-15 finishes this past season. He had a low round of 68. Ryberg owns a 3.793 grade-point average as a Business Management major.
Chowan’s Inecia Rolle collected the honor for women’s golf. The senior from Nassau, Bahamas captured individual medalist honors twice this past season. The 2017 all-conference selection had seven top-10 finishes in total this past season. In the classroom, Rolle boasts a 3.94 grade-point average as a Psychology major.
A senior from Greensboro, N.C., Mount Olive’s Brady Elbin picked up the honor in men’s lacrosse. Named a Maverik Men's Lacrosse Division II Media All-American by Inside Lacrosse as a short stick defensive midfielder, Elbin owns a 3.4 grade-point average as a Criminal Justice major.
North Greenville’s Rachel Kellogg earned the honor in women’s lacrosse. A senior midfielder from Orlando, Fla., Kellogg was having a fantastic 2020 season with 27 goals. She owns a 3.4 grade-point average as a Sport Management major.
King’s TJ McMurray garnered the honor in men’s outdoor track & field. A senior from Bristol, Va., Murray was the Conference Carolinas Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 14, 2020. McMurray owns a 3.41 grade-point average as an Interdisciplinary Studies in Elementary Education major.
The 2019-20 Women’s Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Mount Olive’s Taylor Moncrief also earned Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in Women’s Outdoor Track & Field. She picks up the honor for the second consecutive year. The senior from Jacksonville, N.C. owns a 3.857 grade-point average as a Psychology major.
