Queens Takes Overall Lead at Halfway Point in Joby Hawn Cup Rankings; King Moves Out Front for the Men while Lees-McRae Leads for the Women

High Point, NC> Queens University of Charlotte has taken the overall lead in the Conference Carolinas  Joby Hawn Cup at the halfway point after the completion of the winter sports league championships.  The Hawn Cup is awarded to the league member that shows the highest rating of excellence in conference-sponsored sports.  The Hawn Cup is tallied after each sport season (fall, winter, & spring) and then awarded each year in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the former ‘Carolinas Conference’.

Conference Carolinas continues to use the same format that was new for last year, where the Hawn Cup will have a winner for just the women’s sports, a winner for just the men’s sports, and then an overall winner using both the men and women’s combined tallies.  Hawn Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion (2 bonus points) and runner-up finisher (1 bonus point), based on the number of participating teams in each sport.

For the individual men’s cup, a three-way tie for the lead between King, Lees-McRae, and Queens was broken after a Fall stalemate with King currently sitting on top with a .818 rating. The Tornado took the most points (11) during the men’s basketball season where they won the Western Division league regular season. Queens isn’t far behind (.788) as they won their own Eastern Division regular season title and took ten men’s Hawn Cup points during the Winter session.  Barton and Mount Olive jumped-up into a third-place tie with a .667 current rating.  Barton took two bonus points winning the Conference Championship while Mount Olive took one point as the tournament championship runner-up.

Lees-McRae held onto the women’s lead tallying 39.5 points for a .823 rating through the Winter season.  The Bobcats initial lead can be credited to their titles in women’s soccer and women’s volleyball.   They are followed by Queens with 38.5 points and .802 rating who won the women’s cross-country title. Limestone made the biggest move up the women’s ranks gaining two spots on the field.  The Saints won the Conference Championship to gain two bonus points after winning the Western Division regular season title while Barton also won the Eastern Division award and one bonus point as tournament championship runner-up.

For the overall tally, Queens takes the lead from Lees-McRae with a 3.5 point cushion totaling a .796 rating.  Lees-McRae comes in second at .753 with Mount Olive (.716) and King (.691) breathing down there necks for third and fourth place.   Rounding out the schools in order were Limestone .630, Belmont Abbey .605, Barton .574, Erskine .519, Coker .432, Pfeiffer .377, North Greenville .340, and Converse at .188 respectively.
