Anderson Takes Lead in Conference
Carolinas
All-Sports ‘Joby Hawn Cup’
High Point, NC> Anderson University has taken
the lead in the Conference Carolinas Joby Hawn Cup
with the completion of the recent league basketball
championships. The Hawn Cup is awarded to the league member
that shows the highest rating of excellence in all
conference-sponsored sports. The Hawn Cup is tallied after
each sport season (fall, winter, & spring) and then awarded
each year in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his
many years of service to the former Carolinas Conference.
Hawn Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of
regular season finish with bonus points going to the tournament
champion and runner-up finishers, based on the number of
participating teams in each sport. Men's & women’s
golf, men's and women's cross country, and men’s and
women’s track & field are the only conference sponsored
sports in which points are determined solely by conference
tournament finish.
Anderson took over the mid-year lead from early frontrunner
Lees-McRae with the highest rating of .707. Anderson gained
ground from a successful basketball campaign that saw their women
clinch the Conference Tournament Championship and second-place
regular season finish. The Anderson men had their most
successful year in league basketball as they finished runner-up to
Mount Olive in the Tournament Championship while also tying for
second-place with Limestone (who both trailed Mount Olive) in the
regular season.
Lees-McRae, who was leading after their hot start to the fall
season cooled to a rating of .571. The Bobcats early success has
been highlighted by their women’s volleyball regular season
and tournament championships, men’s soccer regular season
championship, and men’s & women’s cross country
runner-up finishes.
Limestone currently sits in third place with a rating of
.558. Pfeiffer, Queens, and Mount Olive are close behind with
ratings of .521, .512, and .502 correspondingly.
Rounding out the schools in order were Belmont Abbey .482, Erskine
.350, Barton .304, Coker .244, Converse .233, and St. Andrews .184
respectively.
