High Point, NC> Queens University of
Charlotte has taken the overall lead in the Conference Carolinas
Joby Hawn Cup at the halfway point after the
completion of the winter sports league championships. The
Hawn Cup is awarded to the league member that shows the highest
rating of excellence in conference-sponsored sports. The Hawn
Cup is tallied after each sport season (fall, winter, & spring)
and then awarded each year in honor of former Commissioner H.C.
"Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the former
‘Carolinas Conference’.
A new format has been adopted by Conference Carolinas for this
year’s Hawn Cup which will have a winner for just the
women’s sports, a winner for just the
men’s sports, and then an overall winner
using both the men and women’s combined tallies. Hawn
Cup points are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular
season finish with bonus points going to the conference tournament
champion (2 bonus points) and runner-up finisher (1 bonus point),
based on the number of participating teams in each sport.
Queens currently leads in all three categories of the Joby Hawn
Cup standings after overtaking Lees-McRae who was leading in all
three after the fall season. On the women’s side Queens
has tallied 35.5 points highlighted by their women’s cross
country championship title. They are followed by Lees-McRae with 33
points and Mount Olive in third with 32.
For the men’s cup, Queens won the most recent regular
season basketball regular season title and this past falls cross
country championship to score 25 total points. They are
followed closely by Limestone, who won the basketball tournament
championship to help total 23.5 men’s points, and Belmont
Abbey with 22 points.
For the overall tally, Queens, Lees-McRae, and Mount Olive stand
atop the standings. Queens’ overall rating of .829 sets
the bar with Lees-McRae at .753 and Mount Olive at .671.
Mount Olive helped their cause having three runner-up teams in
conference tournament championships with their women’s
basketball and men’s & women’s cross country teams.
Rounding out the schools in order were Belmont Abbey .658,
Limestone .610, Erskine and Pfeiffer are tied with .555,
Barton .541, St. Andrews .398, Converse .349, and Coker .342
respectively.
