High Point, NC> Queens University of
Charlotte swept the Conference Carolinas Joby Hawn
Cup with the completion of the recent league spring
championships. The Hawn Cup is awarded to the league member
that shows the highest rating of excellence in all men’s
conference-sponsored sports, all women’s conference-sponsored
sports, and both the men’s and women’s
conference-sponsored sports combined. The Hawn Cup is tallied after
each sport season (fall, winter, & spring) and then awarded
each year in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his
many years of service to the former Carolinas Conference.
This is the first year that the Hawn Cup is comprised of three
different awards which include: the women’s sports award, the
men’s sports award, and the overall cup winner (combining
both the men & women’s results). Hawn Cup points
are awarded in each sport based on the order of regular season
finish with bonus points going to the tournament champion (2 pt.)
and runner-up finishers (1pt.). Men's & women’s golf,
men's and women's cross country, and men’s and women’s
track & field are the only conference sponsored sports in which
points are determined solely by conference tournament finish.
Queens University of Charlotte took the overall mid-year lead
from early frontrunner Lees-McRae College after the completion of
the winter basketball seasons and never looked back. With the
highest rating of .839 among league members, Queens claims their
first Hawn Cup in ten years and their third title overall (2000-01
& 1997-98). The Royals also become the first-ever winners
of both the individual men’s and women’s awards by
sweeping all three honors.
This year Queens success can be traced through strong
performances across many sports. The Royals won
four
Conference Championships, taking titles in men’s cross
country, women’s cross country, men’s golf, and in
men’s tennis. They were conference tournament
runner-ups in women’s tennis and women’s golf and had
teams also win regular season titles in men’s basketball and
men’s tennis.
Mount Olive College took a consistent route to finishing in
second place in the overall standings. The Trojans took three
tournament titles and three runner-up finishes for the year.
Tournament Champions for Mount Olive were baseball, men’s
track & field, and women’s track & field while
runner-ups included men’s cross country, women’s cross
country, and women’s basketball.
Limestone College finished third for the second consecutive year
with a .718 rating. The Saints blossomed after the New Year
jumping four spots up from the fall rankings by winning the
conference championships in men’s basketball, women’s
lacrosse, and men’s lacrosse. They also finished
runner-up in baseball, men’s tennis, women’s track
& field and men’s track & field.
Lees-McRae finishes in fourth place overall with a rating of
.634. Pfeiffer, Belmont Abbey and Erskine were close behind
with ratings of .609, .578, and .555 correspondingly.
Rounding out the schools in order were Barton .481, Coker .448,
Converse .361, and St. Andrews .268 respectively.
Queens also took the individual titles in the men’s
conference- sponsored sports and the women’s conference-
sponsored sports. This is the first year for both of these
new awards. The men’s top three teams were Queens,
Limestone, and Mount Olive while the women’s top three teams
were Queens, Mount Olive, and Erskine.
