Travis Chell was named Assistant Commissioner for Communications on March 18, 2024.
Chell joined the Conference Carolinas league office after 11 years at King University. In 11 years in Bristol, Chell helped develop and grow the athletic communications department following the transition to NCAA Division II and Conference Carolinas. He created and grew the Tornado social media channels as well as the broadcasting efforts. With his help, King was able to change to multiple camera angles for their broadcasts over the last two years.
Chell has served as the chair of the Conference Carolinas Athletic Communications Committee since being voted into that position in 2015. Along with that, he chaired the website committee for Conference Carolinas as part of a league-wide rebrand in 2017. That work continued as he served on the broadcasting committee that helped Conference Carolinas setup standards for their broadcasts.
Following the 2022-23 season, the King athletic communications office that consisted of Chell and Stevie Larson was selected Conference Carolinas Athletic Communications Staff of the Year.
Along with Conference Carolinas service, Chell served on the women’s soccer regional advisory committee (RAC) from 2015-17 and the softball RAC from 2020-23. Chell also served on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Committee and has been the southeast region’s representative for the last three years after being voted into that position in 2021.
Chell has helped host many Conference Carolinas championships on campus as well as the softball championship each of the last 11 years. King hosted Conference Carolinas Championships in men’s basketball as well as men’s and women’s volleyball and acrobatics & tumbling.
He was also an integral part of King hosting the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Game of the Week broadcast on CBS Sports Network in 2015, a game that saw the Tornado comeback to defeat the University of Mount Olive.
In 2021 Chell was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications and External Affairs as he took over fundraising for the athletic department. In the last three years, he has helped sign new sponsors that continue to benefit the Tornado student-athletes to this day.
Chell has also served as a regional and national voter for the D2CSC men’s basketball poll as well as a regional voter for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) regional poll. Over the last three years, Chell has served the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), publicizing the women’s wrestling rankings as well as championing the regional and national wrestler of the week awards. He has also served as a voter for the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) players of the week as well as voting on All-America ballots.
